EVANSVILLE, IND. FRIDAY, JAN. 15 tkll city 13 the name adopted by the Swiss As sociation for their rrevf city below Cannelton. in Tcrrv coüntv. We do not W 90 admire the selection; all names ccmpoun ded with city are abominable; and it ap pears as if the location the leading ideas of the Society or the associations of - their Fatherland or of their adopted country ought to have SUcestCd some nam? more appropriate and euphonious w I r But the future character and greatness of the plabe, may add such lustre to the name as to make it more agreeable. The Engineers are already in tne field laying off the lands, and making the surreys to determine the location of the new city, and the most eligible sites for some of the proposed manufactories. o i -ii., . .l,,.. , OCVtln mm iuv uiiw ouui-s uu 'KI SCalo hac been projected and companies formed to erect them. Not much will bo done except to survey and plot the grounds till early spring, when the chief immigration will occur. The agents of the Association are still in negotiation to add to the Territories of the Company. Many who are not members of the original society are unit ing in the movement and are making in dividual purchases in the vicinity and will finally become associaticd with the community irom sjmpattiy in incirgcnera! views, and a union oi enterprise. The members of tho Association belong "o to the school of Frco-Thinkers in mat ters of religion and politics. In political doctrines they are of the faith of the Ked Republicans in Europe. hoy are iiKCiy 10 aau any sircngui to mo sway of priest-craft, wherever their influence extends. They are more hostile to the doctrines and hierarchy of the Latholics than is American Inow-rothingism. In their new settlement ther desim liberal j u I provisions lor scaoois and seminaries. but their programme i3 silent upon the 6ulject of churches and ministers. These will not be opposed, but they must rely on their own strength to gain a footing. The location of so large a body of men at that point has greatly advanced the prices of property in Ml the Southtrn parts of Perry county, and created a very active demand for lands from outside settlers, and from speculators. The selection made by the Association, after a long and thorough examination of the whole Northwest, has attracted the attention of the country to that particular point, and will havo an important influence in drawing the public regard to the valuable resources of all parts of Southern Indiana. OIR RELATIO.V WITH IVICARAUCA. Mr. Cass in a letter accompanying the President's Message states that no treaty has yet been ratified for the guarantee of protection to the Nicaragua transit route; nor is there any information in the Department on the subject which ho can consistently communicate. Mr. Yrisarri, tho Nicaraguan minister at Washington, says there is only one way for our government to accomplish all iU purposes, and Achcive at once a great deal more than all Walker's expeditions could do in twenty years. It is to acknowledge the Nicaraguan Minister and enter into treaty stipulations to protect the transit routa, and for a free and friendly commercial intercourse. This simple act, so just, politic and proper, he says, will restore hope and confidence to his country, and contentmeat and happiness to his people, and at the same time secure the most valuable benefits and advantages to tho ciaizeos of the United States. In a letter dated Dec. 30th, he, as Minister from Guatemala, San Salvador and Nicaragua, returns thanks to the Government of the United States for havinj; taken away the adventurer, Walker, and his intadin? band from tho point of which they had taken possession, on the coast of Nicaragua, and thus relciving these friendly countries from the evils with which they would have been visit ed. We are satisfied, that friendly negotia tion conducted wilh tact and skill, could accomplish more than an army of 20,000 but unfortunately our diplomacy is nn skilful and weak. natevar is done in our favor, will be the result of the course of fortunate events. 0C7Tbe Treasurer of the Kvansville Benevolent Association has receiied, through tha Journal office, from some unknown hand prompted by a benevo lent neart tne sum of five dollars to bo expended for the poor. Each winter for5 f everal years past,a similar donation has come through the same channel, for a like purpose. It ia from, the eountry, and is given to the city poor. We wish some of our citizens whose obligations are more immediate to their own neigh bors, could bo stimulated by this example, to discharge a high social and moral duty, and reap its sweet rewards. We doubt i any money ever expended brings to its possessor half the solid happiness, which this annual donation secures to the giv cr. In the privacy of his own reflections he draws more real happiness ' from it, than many rich men derive from all the displays of their wealth, in splendid res idence rich equipages and costly liv

w at . A at a S this sum annually involves more real sacrifice, than a gift of a thousand dollars yearly would to some of our citizens, vet we are persuaded the donor would not forego the happines he derives from the act though no one but the Journal knows the source of the annual contribu tion if tro deed cost twice the apparent sacrifice it docs. Why will not others purchase tb same solid satisfaction at the same cheap prise? One of the most de plorable circumstances connected with the sad story is, that the gentleman to whom sho was engaged did not intend the slightest in suit or tinKinancss. no .wrote to her, in forming her of a change which he had mado in his situation, stating that lie now received a certain amount of salary, and asked her opinion as to .tho . prudence . of their got ting married. Not receiving an answer, ho went to London himself to converso with her upon the subject, and was met with the in forma tion of her tragic end. Sho was said to be the most beautiful girl in the city. ld& The- fellow ing remarkable circura stances is related by the Baltimore papers, as having recently occurred in that city: On Sunday afternoon as Mrs. Herman was sitting at tho bak parlor window of her residence, in Ann street, near Gough, a win to turtle dove with a dark ring around its neck flew in and lit rtpon ber head. She held out her hand into which tne dove hopped. Yes ttrday morning while attending rehearsal at the llolliday Street Theatre, sho received the Saintul news of her husband a death, who ied of heart disease about or near tho time the dove made its appearance : she was immediately thrown into convulsions and had to be came l borne. tSy Tho Toronto-papers describe a wretch ed scene m that city. Information was giv en to the police that a child had been born at a place called Brook's Buah, and both it and its mother were suffering from cruel expos ore of winter. Tho woman was found lying on a little hay, saturated with snow and rain, and her dead infant lying beside her, with no covonng of any description. The child was born alive, but died from excess of cold. 3?" The Cincinnati Gazette estimates the population of the Queen City at 244,000, bo ing an increase in ten ycais of over 87,000.
