FRIDAY MORKIXG, : : : OCTOBER 24 AUMATUKK ALMANAC: if.rt H.H. Sow Rises fi-21 Sun Sits........ . 5.7 (j-We are glad to see the Enquirer an adTocate of a Eailroad to Grayyille. Ia this good cause it will always find a staunch hacker: Wherever the Democrats have tri irw - umphed, they have made a clean sweep of county offices and all; there is not one 01 tneir enemies left to tell the tale of disaster. C7"Thos. F. Marshal the celebrated Tom. Marshal 13 about to remove from Kentucky to Illinois. OT A Railroad clearing house has been established, in London similar to the clearing House for the banks. . fT We call attention to the advertisement in another column of Mr. Thomas' Billiard Saloon at the Bull's Head. Those who indulge in the manly sport of Billiards will do "well to Civor him with a call. ßrThe river rose over a foot at Ports'mouth on Tuesday, but was falling at Cincinnati Wednesday. The rise from Kanawha was not as large as reported. The river continues " on a stand at this point. 07" Yesterday wbs a busey day at the 'journal office. Ouj composing room was moved down stairs, in order to make room for our Job office. We have been making valuable additions to our Job Type, and are now prepared to do work in the neatest style. Call and look at our specimens. Campbell's Majority in the 3d Ohio District is reduced to Nineteen votes. Mr. Campbell's friends say that they have made a fierce and determined fight for him this time, when had he behaved himself as a true Republican should, there would have been no trouble, and that if he does not go along with exceeding propriety henceforth, they will not lift a finger for him again. Lewis will probably take warning. Lettee Stamps and Envelopes. The number of letter stamps and envelopes daily used in this country is normous, the proportion of the former being much larger. At the , office in Boston the sale 45er day of stamps amounting to about &80O. which ia at Mm rat f $300,000 per annum. Ia addition about, 1 11 'aL 1 f tr i .-.1. mieo luuuijiuu euveiepes, wnico. come a little higher than the stamps, are disposed of daily. The greaterportion of this -large number of . stamps and envelopes is disposed of to the merchants and 'business men of Boston, from which some judgment may be formed of the itcnt and cost of the correspondence, extending as it does to all parts of the world. Lord's" Detector. Lord's Detr-etrtr for tri middle of this month has been received. No business man snould be without a Detcctor.and we know of no one we can more cordially re- - commend than this. In addition to the usual report of the value of bank notes, it describes the vignettes of the different bills now in cir- - culation enabling any one to detect a counterfeit or altered notes. It also gives the actual tion in the country, the counterfeit upon it, together with a corrected list of its officers, thus forming a complete compendium of all ' the necessary information, as well as protec tion, required by any individual handling bank otes. The agent for Lord's Detector is now in tho city, and will give our citizens an opportunity , of procuring it. ' Qj In denial of some infamous charges -circulated in his district against him, the Hon. R. W. Thompson, publishes the following card .-in the Terre Haute Union. They were scarce worin serious nonce, out as Mr. Thompson l has thought proper to formally denounce t their authors, we republish his CARD. So long as the accusation against me that i have been bribed by tho leaders of the Demo- . sratic party with the promise that J shall be j paid $40,000, was confined'to a few irresponsit ble editors or others, I did not regard it nec- - assary to take any public notice of it. I learn, however, that there are a few gentlemen about this city, who, maddened because ii they cannot have everything their own way, ;are meanly and secretly giving circulation to this charge. As tiey are responsible, 1 have ithis to say: that I dare either of them to put 4this charge in print over his own signature, ithkt its truth inav hs tested in iudicial form. If they have not the manliness to do this, let them keep their mouths shut, or else he content to stand before the world as the deliberate endorsers of a wilful and base calumny:a foul and unmitigated lie. R. W. THOMPSON. Terhb Haute, Oct 13, 1856. . , Ci7"The Princeton Courier gives the follow- . ; mg account of a flourishing village, on our canal, in Gibson county. On Monday last we paid a visit to the flourishing little village of Francisco, and were surprised to find it making such rapid progress in .the way of improvements. Since our last visit in Junewe found two new store houses .erected and stocked with goods; a large flouring mill, almost completed, and ten or fifteen .dwelling houses, either completed or under way. Should Francisco continue to improve as it has done for the last year, it will soon become a place of considerable business. It alroady contains two flourishing mills, running 1 each, three pair of stones, a large saw mill, and -some four or five-stores. T .
