Will address the eititeas of Eransville this ertning. Friday. July 3:ih, at the Market Home. Citiins of all parlies are invited to attend. A Visit from Mr. Veatch. Mr. Jas. C. Veatch a -rived here yesterday, and during the day became acquainted with many of our citizens, and as we think, left an excellent-impression on all with whom he conversed. Indeed, much of the dissatisfaction existing among a few here, from a misun derstanding as to his real opinions, appears to have disappeared. We are happy to announce that he will address, the citizens of Evansville tiiis evening at the Market liouse, when we trust that all interested in hearing a full expression of his views, will be present. Mr. V. is visiting Evansville by the express invitation of many of our citizens. . He has been basely slandered by the Lockhart organ here not only aa to his general views on different subjects, but as to language he is charged to have used against foreigners, his motives in contesting an election in Spencer county, hi endorsement of opinions purporting to le Maj. Robinson's, &c., &e. It is due him, therefore, that those who have read those libels should be present. - Let men of all parties be there. A Word Aside. ' Some of our friends have gratuitously placed an interpretatioumpon our remarks of. Wednesday relative'to traitors, &s., entirely unjustified by either the Tvords or spirit of the editorial. ' We had no intention of trying tuwhiv in men to act with us. That is a course ol policy confined exclusively to the Old Line party, and which freemen despise. We scorn the hand which dares attempt to hold a rod over independent citizens, and we despise 'the man who can be moved a hair's breadth by any such despotism. Our sole object was to expose the designs of certain men, who pretending to be bitterly opposed to Lockhait, are weaving plans to assist in his election and to warn honest men and good citizens to beware of them and their meshes. We touched where we intended to the blow hit where it was aimedbut we do not wi-h others who were not touched, to think they were struck at. For instance, those who weie getting up a letter to Mr. Veatch, took our remarks to themselves. We need' say no more'about this, than we did not know of any such lettei in existence or iu contemplation, until after the publication of our article. -The old Whig party was once betrayed when this same Judge Lockhart was a candidate against as good a Whig as there was in the District. Pretended Wnigs lent themselves to the enemy, and succeeded in their object of defeating DeBruler. We have wish ed to warn the foes of Lockhart now, of a similar attempt to betray them. We shall not dodge our duty in this or in any other mattar. If there are none guilty, then none need fear, and none need .alk of "whipping in." But if there are guilty ones: they will do weh to prove themselves able to take care of themselves. It will be demanded of tiiein. Yet we trust those opposed to the election of Lock hart, will be united to a man, and secure what such unity can easily attain, his defeat. 7" Gov. Wright was received at the depot, and saluted along the streets, with loud shouts for Fillmore. There was not much harm in this, peihaps, but we were sorry to hear these shouts continued at intervals while he was speaking, or at timis when his friends attempted to applaud him. We condemn interruptions at any political meeting by members of the party opposed to the speakers, and do so in this case, hoping it will never occur again at a political demonstration in Evansville, although in this case we do not think it was intended as any disrespect to the speaker, who is certainly outside of his office not entitled to the respect of those who shouted for so much better man but was merely an ovorplus of enthusiasm. Visiting us on a mere electioneering tour, he has sunk the Governor into the politician, and is entitled to no more consideration than any other stump speaker but all speakers, even Gov. Wright, should have a respectful hearing. 07" A largo pile of Louisville Journals arrives here every evening of the day of publi cation, by Express. Nearly every subscriber is at the office when they arrive, at 9 o'clock in the evening thus exhibiting their interest in the paper. Wright has been connected with th'i3 "obnoxious measure." They can then attend the meeting with somewhat clear consciences. We invite the attention of Germans to the facts. ' In Got. Wright's Biennial message to the Legislature in January, 1855, ho used tha followinz lanuase: ' - .- "The evils of intemperance are so- numerous, so "Teal, and so aesiruciive. mat an eroori men TL-u r..;,.;o tnoMiPtn uiv,tni v the hst of business, the. loss 'dollars and cents to the manufacturer or rrtailer, or the loss of trade and commerce to the Stale, should for a : ... : im I moment rise into importance, iB contrast with ihoso tfirrililff rftnlil ios nf nr.vprtv sorrow - , . , , r- " wretchedness, moral degredat.ion and crime which darken our land, and fill our alms- . 0 , . .,.. In accordance with these sentiments he , made the following recommendation: . I '"No one can doubt that there is a strong : public sentiment in Indiana in favor of a chanse ' in our laws upon this subject; and it is the duty of the people's servants to carry out that sentiment. It will give me pleasure to cooperate with the Representatives of the people, in the adoption of any constitutional measure, that mav ho calculated to remove this ac knowledged evil from the State." In compliance' with this recommendation. ' the "representatives of the people," an Old i r tri 1 Line Senate and a Republican House, passed j the measure known as the Prohibitory Liquor i Bill. ' It became a law by the approval andqßcud sirnature of GOV. WRIGHT. It-was J J passed by his recommendation, and became a law only through his approval. He was re-.J sponsible for it more than any other one man, and as much as the Legislature itself. Euined by a little Governmsnt Pap.' As an evidence of just what a thing of party it petty Government office will make a man of how a little appointment at Washington will change even an ordinarily sensible and in dependent man into a mere p'artizan tool read the following extract from a letter writ ten by Mr. Whittlesey. Whit, although a staunch Old Liner, used to have an occasional opinion of his own, and sometimes was bold enough to express it. He once hated that which honest men should hate, and no doubt d-'spised a coward and ruffian as such charac ters desorve. But Whit has been appointed a sub sub-clerk at Washington, and is now tool enough to lay his grateful homage at the feet of Brooks, the cowardly wretch whom the very saliva over which, an honest breath has passed would be too good to bestow upon his carcase. Hear Whit: : ' ' . , . The excitement in Washington, consequent upon Uw Brooks trial, is. dying away, The result you have doubtless learned. Mr. Brooks, though not expelled, resigned his seat inconsequence of tha vote of the majority pf the House ooing against him. llis-speech deI. vered ul his resignation, was one of the most masterly 'vindications of Southern, rights I have ever h?ard. No man could have looked upon his nobie boating, and listened , to his earne-t and imp.issioiro i appoal, and Said in his heart that Preston S. Brooks was an "assas sin,',! or a "bully," as the :Black Republican serviles have charged.- At the height of one ii bis most beautiful appeals he said: -'Sir, 1 cannot, on my own account, assume there sponsil.ility, in the face o . the American people, of commencing a line of couduot, -which, in my heart of hearts, 1 believe would wtbvert the foundations o( this government and drench, this Hall in blood. No act of mine shall.inauurate revolution; but when. you, Mr. Speaker, return to your ow n. home, and hear the people of the great North and they are a ; great people sj e k of me as a bad man, you wiU do me the justice to say, a blow struck by me at this time would not have ben followed revolution.', The evidence of truth which this 'tcautiful peroration contained brought down the galleries of the House in a tumult of ap: plause, which was checked by the Speaker. It is idle to deny tha, for the time, the destinies of the American people; were in Mrlirooks' hands. He might . have pursued a course which would have been die origin of a civil rar, but his patriotic heart prompted hinr to bettar deeds, tor which he is entitled to the Kratitmle instead of the contempt of the people of the North. . ; The ordinary lar.guage of contempt is not strong enough to apply to the above sentiments. The destines of the American people in the hands of this poor whipped dog Brooks, and tho; American people only saved from a civil war through his patriotic heart which prompted him to better deeds! And that "beautiful peroration" the twaddle of a prating coward mouthing big words, after sneaking behind a man in a Confined position; ami knocking him down with a club, and beatin'"him after insensibility! We ask the pardon of our readers for publishing the aboe stuff. Sinking of the Eock City. . Loss of Life ! We learn from the officers of the Diamond, down yesterday morning, that the propellor Rock City, while coming down near Belle Vuc on Tuesday night, ran into a snag and sank immediately. Her bow is out of water on the snag,r with her stern lying in eight feet water." Three eabhv passengers are reported as lost. The Rock City was a new and fine stern-wheeler, built for the Nashville trade, and was, when sunk, hound for St. Lottis. Her cargo wjlf be saved in a damaged condition, but fears are entertained that she will break in two. Our informant was not certain as to the exact local ity of the disaster, but thinks it was near Belle Vue, Further .particulars to-morrow. 03" We thank our head news bo v, Bob Stanley, for. a tremendous, water melon sent .... , , u yesterday. If any of our readers have a taste for the horrible, wo would recommend to their notice the pap-ers published throughout the Union, the past week. Beginning with the railroad a cident at Philadelphia, where dozens pinioned in their seats by fallen timbers were roa -ted al.ve, down to the murders, affrays and accidents, which adorn the columns of our city co:c:npoiai:es. We readevory dav of men lemg cut, shot and beaten to death, as though it were a matter of cuurse, and the "Locals" who record these affiirs, go into particulars with a relish, which shows, very plainly, a want of delicacy on the part of the writers and a morbid taste on the part of a community which requires such disgusting details But we do not wish so much to condemn the manner in which these things are "dished up," as the frequency of their occurence. A few days ago, a large company was poisoned at Rising Sun, and since nearly all have died from the ell'ect. But the refinement of cruelty has been reached by a man in Missouri, w hoj to revnge himself upon a neighbor poisoned "a large school of little children, by putting arsenic in the spring from wiiich thoy ttrank. Eleven innocent children died, together with the schoolmaster. It is hardly necessary to state that the guiltj wretch was hung as soon as found. ' " : Anothing startling fact is the number of robberies, and even murders, committed by mere boys. On Thursday the polfce of Meiui phis arrested a half a dozen boys from 15 to 17 years of age, who for months 1 have leeti carrying on a regular system of robbery. The last Bui titnore Patriot, the Iafe St. Louis and New Orleans papers, all have accounts of robberies, stahbilig a (frays and brutal .'fights, between boys, all -less than twenty yetrs of age. We are giad to know that Ucal items of this kind are scarce in Evansville. We are wonderfully free from these things and it is our earnest wish that we may ever remain so. . A glance at yesterday morning's exchauges, would convince one that life has a -dark side indeed, Verily, we are upon evil times. A Lie Against Vsatch Kepelled. In ISoi, at a public speaking at the Methodist Church in t'tis place, one And. L. Robinson whose abolitionism no one will question, declared in substance that the fugitive ..lave law was wrong, arid ought not to Ce enforced, and declared that there was a "higher ,aw," than the Constitution of the -Unite d Siates. Believing this, Mr. Robinson endeavored to inculcate the doctrine of resistance to tha requirments of the fugitive slave .law and the ompromises of 1850. When Mr. Robinson concluded hi, treasonable abolition remaik.-, James C. Veatch, arose and remarked in substance that t'r Robinson had enpressel his view ? better than heconld do it himself. DemTue editor 'make the aliove statement without the-slightest qualification leaving hi readers to inler that ho was present and heard the speech of A. L. Rotdnson. But we know better thin th t comes to,fbr we, were present and. heard all that Mr. R. had to say on that occasion. The editor of the Democrat was not there, and we believe was never in Spencer county until 1855. Ue knows nothing about Mr. Robinson's speech, but what has been told him. and the above is a ridiculous fabrication. In speaking of the fugitive slave law,. he said nothing that could reasonably le construed into a resistance of that measure; he did not advocate its repeal but wished it to be amended to allow the writ of ''Habeas Coyj" and right of trial (y jury. He made no allusion to a "higher law." He placed himself upon the Constitution and made all his remarks accord with the teaching of Jellerson and all good Democrats, down to 1818-9. , Iii ä speech was one of the best historical speeches that wa-i ever delivered in Rockport, .so acknowledged by friends and foes. .
