The rivrr at this point is at present almost at a land, with seven and a half feet to Cairo. On Tuesday night the river was rising slowly at' . Keokuk, ana pientilul rains had taken place in that vicinity. A pi ivate dispatch from Lxington, Mo., dated June 21, states that heavy rains were falling, and that the river had already risen ten inches

at (bat point. , The Crystal Palace is now making a trip , in the St. Louis and New Orleans trade. She -will be apt to get tired of that soon. , The old Express sunk in the Missouri ' )att week, as she was coming down with a load of hemp, &c. for St. Louis. She was owned by Capt. H. D. Smith, who purchased her recently for 85,500. The Decatur and Chattanooga packet Molly Garth struck a snag on the night of the 15ih, near Guntsrille, breaking a large hole, from which she instantly filled and sunk in five ' leet water. The damage to the cargo was slight. The steamer Sjuthern Belle has been , old forSiO.OOa to Capt. J. "W. Broadwell, and is o continue to run in the Vicksburgh trade as ' soon as she is put in complete order. It was reported here last Saturday that the low-pressure packet Northerner had sunk, cn her way to St. L juis, and as she did not arrive Saturday, the report was generally believed. It .appears however, that she knocked a hole in her . hull, just below St. Louis, but managed to keep float, until she returned to St. Louis where sue will be repaired. A good deal of hemp on board was damaged. Boat and cargo insured. -The fast packet Baltimore was here Suc- . day morning from Louisville. She will be here . , Tuesday morning on her return irom St. Louis. We thank her clerk for papers. The Highflyer passed op from St. Louis "Sunday morning, making good time. We thank her clerk for a package of papers. This packet - will be here to-morrow morning for St. Louis. We advise travelers that way to take her. The large steamer Niagara arrived here yesterday morning from New Orleans, wiih a good lot of passengers and fairtreight. She only made a short stoppage. We thank her clerk, Capt. Charley Reynolds, for a large package of Tuesday evening's New Orleans papers. The James Watt arrived here early yesterday nibfnilig from Green River. She bn ught jlown & large load, which she was engaged in putting out yesterday. The Cincinnati Times of Saturday says: The Rivet continues to advance rapidly both here and at ports above. By telegraph we learn that a further rise is anticipated ai Pittsburgh. The tributaries above are generally running out ' Ireely. ' The Robt. J. Ward was at our wharf last evening, well ladeti and Well passcngered. She made a quick trip. But liale freight was put out by her here.

Grant Thorburtis Thia gentleman, better known as ''Laurie Todd," writes a letter annually to the Home Journal, giving reminiscences of the early days of the Republic. He is a Scotchman by birth, and landed here at the age of twen ty-two. He la Bow eighty-two years of age, and ia as bright and sprightly as a young man. We give below the closing portion of bis last letter: In 1801, Thomas Jefferson became President of the United States. Aarou Burr, Joel Barlow, Thomas Paine, and others, were his privy-counsellors. Now commenced the age of txptri tnents. Mr. Jefferson, in his inaugural speech, recommended rotation in ofßce, and to sell otir irigates and build gun boats. 1 he frigates were sold for less than ine price ot me rigging, in seven years thereafter, I saw the gun-beats transformed into dung boats, transporting manure from the old Flv Market, foot of Maiden Lane, to raise pumpkins among the Dutch Farmers on Long Is'and. , But the rotation in office was a more seri ous concern. The Irish rebellion of 1793 had just been suppressed; hundreds were or dered to leave the country: America was their goal. These patriots must be provided for.- A secret conclave was held in the star chamber, Burr and Jefferson being the mas ter-spirits. It was resolved to secure these patriots, and this would secure the votes of all their countrymen, who were dailv arriv ing by thousands on these peaceful shores. (After Colonel Burr returned from Europe, whither he had Bed, after the death of Hamilton, he gave me this piece of political intrigue.) In accordance with this cold-blooded plan, I saw revolutionary men and officers who had fought with Washington, pine in tthe prUon-ship and groan in the sugar-house. $Tea I aaw them marched out of the Custom iiouse. Post, and every other office, some on crutches, aome having one leg, some one Arm,, and others leaning on their staffs from wounds received in defence of their country. I saw their places filled by foreign patriots, jnany .of them never having learned a letter .of their own language, and not even able to .speak a word of ours; but such is the gratitude of model republics. Then .commenced the flood of foreign influence, which threatens to place us on the same list with the republics that were. I was naturalized, and voted when Washington was president; I therefere think, that I have as good a right to think, as any Free thinker in America. I saw the rise and fall of the French and Mexican republics: both were strangled in their birth by the hands of Freethinkers and priests. The same tools are at work among us; and a few Judas Americoas are sellin? their liberties to a foreign potentate for a mess of pottage; aid, except God work a miracle, I think, before January 1901, our dear sister Republics, France and Mexico, may look up and exclaim "Lo, America also, may become like one of us!" 'if Atjgtjsta., Me., June 22. ine democratic State Convention as sembled yesterday. Speeches were made by several leading men of the party,- among whom were Ex-Governor Hubbard, and Hon.J Geo. J. Shipley. The Know Nothings-and Maine Law were denounced in strong terms. Judge Wells was nominated for Governor. Albahy N. Y. June 22. The semi-annual meeting of the State Temperance Society convened to-day, E. C. Delavan, the President, tendered his resign nation, to take effect on the 1st of nextJanuary. Resolutions were adopted taking strong grounds in favor of a rigid enforcement of the prohibitory law, and recommending that a World's Temperance Convention be called at some future day; approving of Neal Dow's course in the Portland affair; and recommending that the' Convention be holden at Augusta, Maine. Garritt Smith will address the Convention this evening. WASHINGTON June 22. The "Star" of yesterday evening, publishes a letter from Fort Laramie, which was brought to the States, by the same express rider to whom was attributed the report that the Fort was in possession of the Indians. The letter is dated May 6th, and says there were a large number ot Indians in the vicinity of the Fort, but intimates that there was no danger that they would succeed in capturing the place. Liquor Cases. BOSTON, June 22. In four cases tried before the Municipal Court, for violation of the liquor law, the jury in them all returned a verdict of <not guilty>. PITTSBURG [sic], June 22—P. M. The river is rising, with nine feet water in the channel. The weather is clear and warm. We had heavy rains last night and this morning. Arrival of the Steamer Ariel. New York, June 22. The steamer Ariel has arrived herefrom Havre, whence she sailed on the afternoon of the 9th inst. She brings Paris papers to the morning of her departure, but we find nothing additional in them to what we have by the Asia. They contain some glowing accounts of the feeling of the Lord Mayor cf London who had visited Paris., New Yobk, Jane 22. A bloody fight occurred today on board the ship William Stetson, bound to Quebec, between the officers and rhe crew. One of the crew was murdered and thrown over board. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the officers. Heavy- KobberyaSSjOOO Stolen. We have just learned of a heavy robbery committed a few days since, either in this city or between hers and Jefferson City. Qen. Thomas L. Price, of Jefferson City, who s a contractor on the Pacific Railroad, came to St. Louis last week to get money to pay the laborers in his employ. He got eight thousand dollars in cash, placed it in his trunk, at the Planter's House) and saw it lying safely where he put it, a short time be (ore he left the city. J he trunk was trans ferred to the cars on the Pacific Railroad, conveyed to Washington, placed on the steamboat Sonora, accompanied by General Price, who did not examine it until he reached Jefferson City. When be arrived there and searched his trunk the money was missing. How it disappeared is not known, but it is supposed to have been extracted from the trunk, while on the Sonora, by a thief. An expert professional rogue, it is said, was on the boat, and left her before she arrived at Jefferson City. Gen. Price returned to this ciiy this morning to search for the stolen money, and we trust that, with the aid of the police, he may be successful in jugging the gentleman who stole it. St. Louis News.
