here every sort of sliding vehicle, from the

best finished "turn-outof the liyery stable

down to the most extemporaneous jumper,"

is in constant requisition. For my own pfLrt, my early experience in that mode of traveling, in the far offregions of Yankeedom.was sufficient to satiate me with it for life, and I mu-t be content to let it remain as a etand-

d:n,T theme of wonder, bow anybody ' can go

sleighing,' merely for pleasure. On Sunday

morning, the 21st, we had the extraordinary

phenomenon of thunder and lightning.when

the ground was covered with several inches of snow. I think you have not chronicled

the same fact as having occurred with'you,

and our "oldest inhabitant" gave his usual

testimony to (he total lack of all parallel to the occurrence in his memory.

The Governor (which I tblnk is according to precedent) holds levees every -.Tuesday evening. Entrance and exit are w ithout any particular ceremony, and the large number of ladies and gentlemen that attend, seem to find much enjoyment in that method of cultivating the social principle. The new Kentucky mistress of the mansion presides on these occasions with infinite grace and affability, and has already become highly esteemed in this community.

The clergy of this city, or several of them, are aiming to impart special interest to their

pulpit ministrations, for the benefit of their

own flocks, and the strangers now -in towr, by courses of lectures on subjects of impor

tance. It is gratifying to , notice that these

lectures are very'generolly attended by mem

bers of the Legislature.

There is not so great a rush to the capital

this winter as usual, of the venders of the various kinds of public amusements. An

establishment called a theatre' is in nightly

operation, butcf the particular merit of it

I am more than content to remain ignorant

The Bakers gave a fine concert a few, weeks

ago, which has been the only musical enter

tainment ofthe winter t thus far, though

somebody's troupe of negro piinstreP is heralded in pirti-colored handbill?, as soon to be here. Kidd, tbe Elocutionist, has been reaping quite a harvest from his performances, and is about to teach his art to a class. His entertainments owe their ; popularity

more to tbe large admixture he gives of

dramatic performance, especially of the low comic, than to any excellence' he possesses as an elocutionist. His reading 'exercises, for a professor of the art, are passably good and nothing more. Men in Mr. Kidd's line may do some good, as instructors, by promoting the proper development of the vocal powers, but as to the advancement of the important art of gcod, natural trading, tfiis w riter has no confidence in ; them whatever. Nothing definite has yet been ! heard from Frank May, the absconding cashier of the F."& M. Not exactly. The Campbellite or Reformed Church has that honor, and only the night before he left, the little reprobate was piously engaged there teaching a singing school. Are there any words suited to the tune of the Rogue's March It is gratifying to see that some of ycur correspondents are agitating the subject of forming a Young Men's Association in your city.
