DAILY JOURNAL.

CITY OP D V AXIS VILLB V TUESDAY TIOtt?IIIG. PIOVE.TIBEIt 11.

APPnnriTicES wanted.

"Wishing to fill a couple vacancies ;in our 4

cCIce made by the expiration of the time of tiro of oar apprentice, a first rate opportunity i offered for a couple lad,not oVeT8eventeen years of ase. to learn the Art' and

Myiteries of Printing. The Journal Office Sen excellent inducements to auch. A Pa. rtnts and guardians would do well to give this notice their immediate attention. Apply soon. The Election. The election news published yesterday is very encouraging. Foote the Union candidate, is elected in Mississippi over Davis, the Secessionist. In New York, so far as retui ns

have been received, the Whigs have been doing a good business. The Secretary of State, Attorney General, Treasurer and Canal Commissioner, are all right. In Louisiana, the Whig ticket has generally succeeded. In Wisconsin, the Whig candidate for Governor is doubtless elected. In Illinois the question was Danks or no Bar.ks. The Locotoco papers all over the State with but few exceptions, were for no Banks. We are . glad :o learn that the Northern part of the State has gone most decidedly in favor the

Free Banking Bill. The Southern part of

the State will doubtless go against Banks.

CCJ"We are making arrangements to have a first rate Indianapolis correspondent thU

winter. The one we had employed last

winter gave general satisfaction to our read

ers, and il we do not succeed in securing his

services again, he will, see that wc hare a good substitute. We hope Mr. Carpenter,

our new Representative, will also assist in

keeping our readers advised of everything

affecting their interests, which may trans pire in the Legislature this winter.

Wester Journal and Civilian. This is the present title ofthat valuable periodical published at St. Louis, and heretofore called the Western Journal. Mr. II. Cobb, i now united with Mr. Tarver, as editor, and takes charge of the Literary Department. Tho Journal in greatly improved. It is especially devoted to Western Commerce. Improvements, Mechanical Arts. dec. and is a most excellent periodical. It is published monthly i $3 per annum.

Sunday In San Francisco. From theJSan Francisco Newsletter of Oct. Ut welhould judge that city presented very much such a slate of mora's us is exhibited at New Orleans on Sunday. The Newsletter says - j : ' . ', t ,'"" ' Sunday. ja San Francisco is made by many really a day of rest and recreation. The stores are closed; the cares of business arc thrown aside, and a large portion of com

munity betake themselve 10 various amusements. By 10 o'clock," "there is scarcely a horse left in any of the stables, while equestrians are to be found wending their way out

along the planked road to the Mission; to the '

races, or the Presidio. JSot the least pleasant ride is by way of the Presidio to the Fort, and thence to the Pacific. We noticed also a large crowd on the deck of the Capt. Suttert this morning, leaving Central Wharf for an excursion across the harbor to Centra Costra. ' "A Fool Race came off to-day, at the Pioneer Course, in which Gildersleve ran against lime. . The purse was $1,000 to any one who should run ten miles in an hour. Owing to the strength of the wind the time was increased to one hour and six minutes. Gildersleve came in at the end of the tenth mile

in sixty-three minutes and thirty seconds. The purse was therefore handed over amid

great enthusiasm among the spectators. "

Besides other amusements, there was a

duel in which seven shots were exchanged)

and one of the parties, luckily wounded at

last.

The Newsletter, speaking of Sunday, Sept.

21st, says:

,4The day parsed ofl very quietly, nothing

unusual taking place, except a brutal exni

bition oi a hirht between hve bears and live

bulls, which came on at the Mission, and to

which hundreds flocked. The bulls seem tu

variably to get ahead of the bears.' '

Here u a part ol the doing of the Sun

day previous: "A bull and bear fight came off at Sacramento, last Sunday, at which there were 3, 000 persons present. The result ol this dis graceful alUir was that the bull was left mas

ter of the field, having sent the bear ort" into

the crowd, howlu g. No scnouj injury oc curred. At one time, however, a mewt thrill

ins incident took pi ice. The bull and bear

hid been attached together with a chain.

The chain broke durinir one ol the struggles.

and the, enraged bear made for two trees, in

the Iimts of one of which quite a number o

spectators were collected. As the bear hesi

tated which tree, he should take, the sus-

pence both of those in the tree und of liierest

ol the andience, was most paintul. JJruin, however, selected the vacant tree U3 htj place

of relume.

N. Y. Daily Times. One No. of this (Raymond's) new penny paper, came to us several weeks ago, with which we were so well pleased, both as to execution and ability, that we gave it what we thought, a '-first-rate notice;" but not a another number has

reached us. We learn that on the 9th day of its publication, it had. a circulation of ten thousand copies. We rejoiced in this substantial evidence of its prosperity, although we are sorry to say, that we have to do without it. I Grand Hirer Eagle. Same here. f Ch icago Adt. And the same here. Probably every

prominent paper in Indiana, noticed the reception of the first Number of the N. York

Times, and we have yet to hear of their hav

ing received any copies afterwards, but from several exchanges have understood the con-

rary. We regret thus to be compelled to

believe, there is such dishonesty. displayed in the very outset of a paper, which from its

reported circulation, and the ability display

ed in its columns, promises to be a prominent

paper. We should rmt have noticed the first

No. of a paper sent us from nn Eastern city,

for fear of being duped, had not tho publUh

ers borne a character that we thought placed

them above the practicing ol such a con

teroptible little pleco of dishonesty. If there

hag been any mistake, Mr. Raymond owes an

apology to the Western country press gen

crally,

XjT We are indebted to Mr. Wm. N. Johnsou, of San Francisco, for a copy of the Newsletter, a useful little print, which gives ao abstract of news from one steamship departure to another, and for a lot of other California paper. Billy complains that hi friends in Evaniville are neglecting him. All we can say is, that if they neglect him they neglect one who never does the same thing to his friend. We receive some mark of Wis

attention by every steamer. P3"The Madison Tribune has been com pelled to stop taking the Telegraph Dispatch

es, owing to their irregularity. They are of

but little use unless they can be obtained so punctually and correct, that full reliance may

be placed upon their coming, and correctness by business men. CC7"We owe an apology to Capt. Cup-

pies for having spelled his name yesterday

Puppies, and in big caps at that. There is

nothing of the Pup about him. The mistake

was marked in the proof, but escaped the ob servation of the Typos.

nThe State Journal thinks the present quarrel among the Locofocos of Indiana will be of great benefit to the people upon the

striength of the old adage "when rogues fall

out honest people obtain their rights."

DCThe Detroit Advertiser of the 4th inst.

publishes a letter from a correspondent

whose name is authorised to be given up if de. manded, that McClelland, the Locofoco candi

date for Governor of Michigan, has promised

to pardon the railroad conspirators, lately

sentenced to the'penitenttary, if he ise'ected, and that the friends ol the convicts are supporting him with such expectation.

ZCSThe Brookville Democrat says there was a great excitement in that place last week, oo account ot the arrival ofa two horse omnibus. The crowd gathered around the tavern on its arrival and formed into a comicittee to examine the picters."

ß3"The Grand Jury, in the United States District Court, on the 31st ult. returned 39 true bills against the persons implicated in Che Christiana outrage; thus making in all 117 true biils against the prisoners for participating in this affair.

Sold. Capt. Briscoe has sold the steamer Julia Dean to Messrs. Townsend & McManus of Memphis for $11,000. Her new owners intend to put her in the White river trade.

'ffBy the following unique advertisement taken from the Louisville Courier, we

perceive that Messrs. Webster & Bro., who

are well known here, are keeping "open

house " ut that city in the way of taking Da

gorrcotypea. We are glad to understand

they don't use Stone Coal in taking their

pictures: "COAL. FIFTY CEBITS PClt BUSHEL.." We heard the above price asked yesterday. It struck us an exhorbitant, and .we were curious to know how it would affect the operations ol WEBSTER &. BRO., at 479, Alain street, and wa were pleased to And that they were taking the finest Dagurreotynei we ever saw, notwithstanding the scarcity of Coal none ofthat article Veins used in their process).

fJCWe find a letter in last Saturday's

Louisville Courier, from Mr. Westcott, who

has been accused of having got up the Don

aldson and Greer correspondence. The let

ter originally appeared in the N. Y. Herald. He denies having had anything to do with

the matter, and does not know who Donald

son and Greer are, or whether they are gen

nine nersoni. We make the following ex

tract:

"When the letters were first published, I had no suspicion that any of them were not i .

true and genuine, anu i am new eiuireiv Ufied lhat those published as written by Oeli eral Commander, ol South Carolina; Sam

ucl Trent, Esq.. 'of Missouri; Hon. Wm. R.

Virginia: Dnbert Stranrre, of North Caroli

na; Mr. Giddin js and Mr. Chase of Ohio; ex-Preident Van Buren, and the others pub

have not.inj.1 single instance, disputed the authenticity of Ihe letters imputed to them, and several have admitted it. I do not yet know that the letters of DonalJaon and Greer are fictitious, though the circumstance that ihev do not come forth and show themselves ii quite suspicious, and als- the fact that they do not call for the letters addressed to them remaining at the Aetor Ilousb."

The Lexington Observer &. Reporter, of the 5th inst, says that within two years pait ! the Lexington Insurance Office has paid losses to the enormous sum of one million of dollars.

That's a fact! We know some larpe city

papers, which loose by their circulation, ye

are making fortunes by their advertising pat

ronage. We can candidly say, that we are

not .aware of having made a dime by the

circulation of our Daily. But we are fight ing on, moderately well patronized in adver

tisements. but expecting nothing for some

time to come in the way cf profit from circu

latioti. We bide our time hoping, hovevcr, to be enabled to notice at the end of every

month an increasing advertising patronage

and a continuance of the past punctuality

exhibited by subscribers in paying subscrip

tions. ( Next Saturday we anticipate going

around with the Carrier of the route below Main street, when we desire that every sub

scriber, not paying by the year, will square

his account to date. ' Some few are behind

hand, but ouly through not being able to see

the carrier. Let those who cannot see the

boys, leave money at the places where their

papers are received, to pay weekly dues.

Wt hid the pleasure of a ride upon the Evansville and lllionis Ilailroad on Sü'urday last, in the splendid passenger car purchased by the company. The car is manufactured alter the most approved style, highly finished, and complete in all its appointments. The same may be said of tlie locomotive-one ol great power, having a double ect "I driving-wheels, and finished in good 6tyle. The track is one ol the most substantial end of as firm construction as any we have here tolore seen, especially that part that has a continuous bearing tor the rail. There is some two miles or so laid with crosses alone, and the difference in the stead'hiess and tar of the cars between the former and

the fitter was moot remarkably in favor of the longitudinal timbers. Princeton Clarion. Clertmaü McRDEitFD.-On Friday week .he Rev. Robert McNabh, a respectable üuptitft clergyman of Carthage, N. C, was murdered in hi- own yard. Before retiring Tor the night, Mr. McNabb weit mto his garden about 10 o'clock losmolieand did not return. Dy following up the marks ol blood from the garden, the body wps discovered in the woods some 250 yards distant, horribly mangled, the head nearly severed from the body, and with deep wounds in the eides.

Three of hi own negroes were arrested, of

whom two arc now in jail, without any positive testimony against them. It is supposed that the object of the murder was robbery, as Mr. McNabb was known to have had abocrt $103 in his pocket, which has not been found.
