TRAGEDY RECALLED.
death of Judge Mallory at Lafayette.
A Fire at Annapolis—Hewn and Ooarip From Montezuma, Marshall, Eookville and Bound About Generally. v& -m
AN OLD CRIME RECALLED.
The Killing of tevi Addler at Covington, Fountain County, by Judge Mallory. Lafayette Special.
Wm. a Mallory, of Danville, 111., died here last night. He was on his way home from Logansport, and being taken ill on the train, stopped off here, where he died. Judge Mallory was about 75 years old, and in his early days was one of tb» leading members of the bar of Tippecanoe, Fountain and Warren counties. The death of Mr. Mallory recalls a sad tragedy, occurring about 1856. He was an attorney at Covington, Fountain county. The Addler Brothers, clothing merchants, failed. Among their creditors. was an eastern firm, and the latter employed Mallory as attorney, to collect, if possible, their due. He pressed his suits with such vigor as to incur the hatred and animosity of Levi Addler, who thought Mallorv's zeal partook somewhat of persecution. Bitter words passed between them, Addler malting repeated threats against Mallory life. They met, one afternoon, on the stairway leading up to the room used for court purposes. Addler was going up and Mallory coming down. The former made a threat to kill him and started toward Mallory. He stepped back, drew a pen knife, and with one thrust severed Addler's jugular vein. The wounded man went but a few steps and fell dead.
Mallory-surrendered himself and claimed protection of the sheriff, as the Addlers were prominent and influential. He was tried, and though prosecuted by Hon. I). W. Voorhees, he was acquitted on the plea of self-defense. Addler's body was brought to Lafayette for burial, and the tragedy had long since been forgotten, to be recalled by the sudden death of Judge Mallory.-

Montezcma, Ind., August 31.—The Rev. Father Coffee, the priest lately stationed here, is winning golden opinions from the people here for his courteous and affable manner, his close attention to his duty and an earnest apparent desire to do all- the good he can. An incendiary fire was started last Saturday night about midnight in the store of Edwin Sayles, at Annapolis, ten miles northeast of here. The neighbors by hard work saved the building in a damaged condition, but the stock was destroyed. place was insured, the policy lacking but two (feys of exniring.
