THE YOUNG GENTILES who are pouring into Salt Lake of late, are said to be filling the young wives of the Mormon patriarchs with disgust of their old fractions of husbands. The patriarchs are getting scared about it, and think of taking up their harems and retreating further into the wilderness.

HIGHLY
interesting fight is going
on over the Assessorship of the Second Ohio District. Sam. Cary has filed writ ten charges with Secretary McCulloch and is protesting against Megrue's name being sent to the Senate by the President No other reason is assigned than that Megrue did not render Cary any aid whatever in his late Congressional cam paign. McCulloch has not considered these reasons sufficient, but bas transmit ted Megrue's name to the President to be sent to the Senate.
Cincinnatians are in Washing
ton, among tbem, M. Hnlste&d, of the Commercial, and J. B. MrCJullougb, of the Enquirer, who, it is said, are there for the purpose ^fixing, upon Grant'*Cabinet, and to secure Government advertising for their respective journals. "Mack" is firm in his opinion that Sam Ct^y should be Secretary of the Interior, and offers bonds that the latter will work eight hours per day during Grant's administration whil Halstead asserts that Ohio will not bi satisfied unless Gaddis is made Postman ter General.-
Bbvxbdy JontoBON is "getting his back up" over the condemnation which his oourse in England meets with here. On the latest occasion on which he took din ner, he availed himself of the opportunity to allude to it. He said that he had taken by the band every man who had beei willing to take him by the hand, and i: there were persons in America who ob jected to the course he had purled, should pay small deference to their opin ion, because h6 Considered., them totally disqualified by nature, to decide tl)e&ues tion.
Tax latest indications are that Bussia got $7,000,000 'of tiki appropriation for Alaska, afttt'tfa^t'only $200 0ft0'lbdged in the congressional lobby. It appears that $25,000 of this has been run down till the trail is lost close to Robert J. Walker. Biggs, the Washington banker, appear^ to have been intrusted with the pleasant^ duty of disbursing this little sugar-plum? which Bussia was willing to pay as bonus on the sharp bargain that she felt she was driving with the United States, Biggs, therefore, will be a valuable witness before the committee which is examining into the transaction, and has been put to the question But what can you do with any of them They have their commission, and we have Alaska.

Justice the Chicago Journal contrasted the leniency shown in the acquittal of General Cole for insanity and the refusal of the jury to acquit Andrews on that pies. An Eastern paper replies that Deacon Andrews plea of insanity ,w*s overthrown by the prisoner's own sane and clear testhbony. It says that one Doyle, of Maine, some years ago, also convicted himself by the straightforward, nets «f his own testimony. On bis first trial the Jury disagreed. In the interval between his first and second trial, a law was passed enabling the accused in criminal cases to testify. He did tiestify on the second trial—and was promply pronounced guilty, although, as a rule, a second jury acquit where a first has failed to convict. The closing of tbe ^videnoe in the trial of Mrfc Clem, greatly increased the interest in the proceedings, and the attendance yesterday was larger than during any time in the last twelve days. Every available inch of spaee was occupied, whlle upon the oawide of the room, in the hail, there was, at all times, a lsre« WOW4' eagwly trying to obtain entrance, ^he luge attendance of ladies was paftiettlariy noticeable, and so anxious were many to. hear the argument, that they stood up foT Several hours.-—
A nnniMr of! lawyers from different pats of the State were also present.— The prisoner-*'*ait -dressed as she has been from the commencement of the trial, and presented much the same appearance. Her husband sat upon one side and her |0i|f Upon the other. She did not, however, manifest that same interest whieh she did during the examination of the witnesses, and did not look at the speaker or ihe jury, ibut Sat with her eyes fixed uppn the labta ip front of her, rarely raiung .theri), and then hastily dropping, them- Her Xace was almost stolid, generally but at times when Mr, Dye alluded to her directly, or brought out some particularly strong argument against her,-she would quickly and nervously bilehsr llpS or wet them with her tongue. Her self-control and powers of endurance are something wouderful.— The mental anxiety and care of tbe last two weeks have been terrible, and would unnerve many a man, but Mrs. Clem does not seem to have been affected bj it at least neither her features nor her man ners indicate it.
The openinz speech on tbe part of the State, was made by Mr. Dye. He com menced at nine in the morning and closed a few minutes after three, tbe Court having taken a recess of one hour at noon.— His speech was a most able effort, and completely covered all the ground traveled over in the case1. His speech set forth all the point? Bfoned in/.his opening statement to the jury,, viz motive, preparation, time, opportunity and the possession of tbe fruits of the crime. He first alluded, in appropriate ianguage, to the importance-ot the oase, and the treat responsibility of the jury, and spoke of the crime and .its dreadful, guilt. He then went on to show that tbe mur der was the result of a conspiracy, of which Mrs. Clem was a mem ber. The crime was not the work of a moment, and if only a robbery there would have been tip need for the murder of Mrs. Young. She was killed because she knew the parties to the conspiracy and c^uId have exposed them. Mr. Dye then went.pb to show that the parties under arfest and Jacob Young had business transactions together,' involving large amounts of .money. He compared their bank accounts, showing that the transac tions, first commencing with hundreds, in a few months amounted to thousands of dollars, Alsd that money obtained by one metpber of tbe ring found its way into the hands of all. In the course of time large amounts jvere owing" In banks and to individuals, mostly by Young, and the credit and resources of the.ring having become e3&*u*ted, he was killed and the money* left in .the possession of the ring pocketed. The defence bad been very careful -to exclude all testimony in regard to the bank transactions, and bad in DO way ende»yored_to. flgpfoiaJhem.. Hart, xiatr" who had notbihg tif do with thorn had testified, but Abrams, who was patty to these affairs was not called as witnefes.
This woman was a self-reliant woman of inflexible purpof e, and could, if she ohose, explain all:about these money mat ters, which were kept seeret from ber own husband. An ominious silence bad been maintained in regard to them all Mr. Dye reviewed the evidence in regard to the money matters at great length, and claimed that even if Mrs. Clem was not present at the murder she was no less guilty, and that an alibi was of no avail, even if clearly proved, He then spoke of the testimony against Abrams, and Syke Hartman, urging with great force their intimacy with Mrs, Clem. Cravens Haitmant he said, had not been heard of, and was he a man or a myth As to tbe alibis, Mrs. Clem had failed in thafirat one, which She:had maintained far twenty-one dsjyst tiz| that she was at Tiome all that afterboon. And when she failed in that, she had attempted to estab lished the second one, which bad also failed, if she was not at Cold Spring that afternoon, she knew where sue was, and could have no difficulty in proving it.
Mr. Dye was followed by Mr. Duncan the Prosecuting Attorney, in a speech V|,hich.aduyRl«y«l^ good.deal of ability bat which, in the nAfure of. things, had neoeasarily to travel over t!he ground oc cupied by Mr. Dye. It was an able efibrt, andbrodght into view many strong prints, .whieh had only been briefly touched upon in the first speech.
At the night session Mr- Leathers com menced tbe argument for tbe defense. He will be answered to-day by Mr. Pishback, who in turn will be followed by. Mr, Hanna, who will close the case.
