The

Journal

of yesterday mounted its

Shanghai on Cincinnati. If it c*" cause for loud rejoicing in the result of the election in that city, it must be, like the generality of juveniles, "pleased with a rattle, tickled with a straw."

That Booster.

The

Journal

hoisted its hilarious roos

ter yesterday morning and jubilated over the "Democratic victory" in Connecticut with a reckless extravagance in the use of job type and exclamation points. A gain of one thousand imported votes in that State was a balm for wounds received in the laet battle here at home. Our friends found in our own election returns sufficient cause for gratulation and were not obliged to draw consolation from distant sources.

Connecticut.

The result attained in Connecticut by importing the voting population df the Five Points is not altogether unexpected nor is it calculated to cause any discouragement us to the result of the national campaign. The Stale, in epite of Democratic frauds, can and will be carripd for

The St. Louis

Repudiator

Thomas,

proposes to

show, in a future number, that whila our debt is larger th«n that of Great Britain our resources for payment are much smaller, and therefore, if she cannot pay her debt how shall we pay ours. 1

We agree with the Cincinnati

tho opinion that the

Timet

something of a task to support either end of its proposition. It will be not only difficult to show that two thousand five hundred millions are four thousand millions, and still more difficult to show that one hundred thousand square miles of territory, with thirty millions of people, that doubles their number every century, are equal in resources to three million square miles of territory, with thirty-five millions of people that double their number and wealth every thirty years. The

finding the facts so flatly con

tradicting its theory will be forced to fall back upon the reply of the philosd^her, who, finding himself in a similar category, exclaimed, "So much the worse for the facta." This has been the trouble with the theories of the Democracy for ten years past.

The roply of thff managers was based upon the leading idea that the President, by his reply, admitted a determination to haverSecretary Staktos ousted, in defiance of the Tenure of Office law. This desire was manifested as early

We further iirprovo the opportunity afforded by the brief suspension of the great trial at Washington to discuss the more material features thereof, as already developed.

The question of law argued before the Senate on Wednesday, wes one which had a vital bearing upon the point of tho case. Thejudgement whether several of the charges bearing against tho President could be sustained if there was evidence to establish the accusations, also depended upon tho decision made upon this itaatter—tho admlssability of evidence. A few days since we had a telegraphic announcement of the burning to death of three of the children of Hon. Charles Dudley, of Ottumway, Iowa. Since then the full particulars have come to hand, and we reproduce them:

The remains of the three were conveyed to the residence of Mrs. Edward Dudley, where the family now are. All that remain of the three who were so full of hope and joyous anticipations at the setting of the previous evening sun was charred lifeless mas» ses, indistinguishable. God forbid that any more of our readers should meet with such a fate.

Mr. Dudley has been most unfortunate with his famiiy, ten deaths having occurred, and only two of them from diseases, eight tragically or suddenly. Only last spring, in May, or Juno, his eldest son, Edward, was killed by fractious mules, and now three more links ate savagely torn from the chain. Mrs. Dudley1, the •^mother, is a daughter of
