Takes Over New Truck Agency

Ho came to this country from Kngiand to design the eightylinder V-type Cadillac engine, the "Sensational announcement of which «as made in 1914. Before coming to 1 lie 1'nited States. Mr. White was chief engineer of both the Iaimler and the 'Napier. The Napier cars which he designed held several world's s.peed rect»rds and were conceded to be the finest automobiles built.

Machine Gun Equipment On Dodge Brothers Cars

Machine Gun Company No. 1. Eleventh Illinois Infantry, has been provided by the state with two Dodge Brothers' motor cars, with cormpdete machine gun equipment.

When the National Guard ofl Illinois became federalized, immediate steps were taken to organize three regiments of militia, which would be available in case of riots or other extraordinary acts arising within the state.

Two regiments, designated as the Ninth and Tenth, were raised In the central and southern part of the state, while the Eleventh regiment was recruitod wholly from Chicago and vicinity.

General James A. Stuart was selected by the governor to lead the Chicago contingent, with the rank of colonel. Nelson Morris, chairman of the board of directors of Morris & company, was made captain of the machine gun company, with a strength of nearly one hundred men.

The state issued full equipment, Including Springfield rifles, to the regiment and to tthe machine gun company, grins of the latest pattern and Dodge Brothers motor cars. The machine guns shoot 80 calibre builets at the rate of 420 per minute and are mounted on a awivel sitting on a specially constructed frame over the hood. It does not require more than a casual observation to discern that the automobile is beginning to step into the breach In a. decisive way to till the gaps made in business ranks by ttu* loss by conscription of trained salesmen and skilled mechanics. Its adaptability for conserving time and speeding up man power has ulreadv been utilized to great advantage in lines of business that require city solicitors of service men. "I know of three flrm» who employ iron) ten to twenty salesmen covering Detroit and suburban territory," saUl a Dodge Brothers official. "Most of these salesmen are within the draft age. These firms have already discounted a loss of at least a third of their force and the possibility of having to take on untrained men by fur--nishing their older salesmen with passenger cars. These men have already demonstrated their ability to make six times as many calls and have practically tripled their orders at a much decreased cost by the use of passenger cars. "I can cite another interesting- instance where service men are utilized in the dual capacity of salesmen. A big phonograph hou-ie has the custom of sending a mechanic at certain intervals to adjust instruments and forestall any possible service complaints. I,ater this firm developed the Idea of having the mechanic suggest a list of trial orders on the new popular records. This plan worked out so successfully that it not only cut out the service expense, but actually brought in a profit. "In this case, the war brought Kbout a decrease In the force which again was met by the use of automobiles. The manager reports to me that although he has had to dispense with half of his men, the automobile has already duplicated the firm's former profit on the Investment. "There are so many hundreds of lines of business to which the automobile process oan be applied as a time-saver and labor-saver that its utility is going to be more pronounced than ever in bolstering up the scarcity of trained men."

Automobile Greatest Means of Transportation

Business was appalled by the brief suspension of railroad activities during the winter blizzards, yet the total carrying capacity of the railroads Is only one-sixth that of the automobiles In use in this country. One authority goes so far as to declare that the carrying capacity of the automobile is greater than that of the railroad and street car systems combined. "Deprived of the more than 4,000,000 automobiles in this country, the passenger and freight congestion would be far greater than that occasioned by a complete tie-up of railroad traffic," says A. G. Seiberling, general manager of the Haynes Automobile company, Kokomo, Ind. "Not only does the passenger and freight mileage of the automobile exceed that of the railroad, but the railroad depends almost exclusively upon the automobile for the primary movement of freight from farms and factories and the final distribution. In many cases long hauls by motors even take care of shipments usually sent by raii. The government has demonstrated conclusively the practicability of such a move. "Use of the automobile has become so general that even the passenger miles traversed exceed those of either steam railroads or electric lines. And every mile traversed by an automobile in carrying freight or passengers where this service would naturally fall to the electric or steam lines means a great saving of coal. Gasoline is relatively plentiful and the price has advanced less than that of other fuels. "The automobile is the nation's great means of transportation. Its cost of operation is relatively low and it is readily accessible for use. Jt is the chief safeguard against possible failures of other means of transportation, in addition to being regularly supplementary to them."
