BAfl.ROAll BATTERn. N —One bnmlred tons of railroad iron for the Jeffereonvillo, Madison and ludlanapolls Railroad were being delivered at I he depot of that road in Now Albany on Monday, bv the New Albany Rolling Mills of J. Bragdon A Co. ~ —Hons. C. M. Allen and D. C. Branham have returned Irom New York, after making the necessary arrangements for the Immediate completion of the Vincennes Railroad. We will have a new and valnable line in a few dave. —At no time since the commencement of the grand enterprise liaa the work upon the bridge over the Ohisat the fallsat Jeffersonville, been pushed more vigorously than at preaeut. The largest possible available force of workmen are now
engaged.
—The Madieon Courier says: '‘The old spirit of enterprise in this city Is reviving. Our citizens talk of a million and a half for a bridge over the Ohio, and a railroad to connect with the Cumberland and Ohio, over in Kentucky, in addition to the shortest line railroad between l^ouisville and Cincinnati. —New RAii.ROAns.—Articlesof association were yesterday Hied for the Orand Rapids, Wabash ami Cincinnati Railroad Company. The capital stock is 32,000,000. The road will run from Warsaw, Kosciusko county, through the counties ol Wabash, Grant, and Madison, to the city of Anderson. It will be about eighty-two miles in length. The following gentlemen comprise the first board: (thanes W. Chapman, Joseph Crabbs. Benjamin F. Lines, James Brownlee, Thomas N. Htillwell, Joseph 1’ugh, Jacob Harter, Calvin Cowglll, David Kirkpatrick, C. H. Tibbetts, Jonathan F. Winslow, Ell Davis, Milton S. Robinson. —The Lafayette Journal says: “We learn from Adams Earl that General Gridley has just closed a contract with responsible parties for the completion and equipment of the west end of the Bloomington road, from the State line to Bloomington, twenty-eight miles of which must be completed and In running order by the first of January next, In order to fulfill the terms of the county impropriation, as we understand it, while the rest must be dene by a year from that time. The Bloomington road means business, and will be put through promptly, as we are fully assured.” The Corydon Democrat says: “There are persons in our county (Harrison) who believe that the full amount of money asked of this comity to aid in the halloing of the railroad is to be raised by taxation. This is a mistake. The amount naked of this county is $100,000, and of this amount only $69,000 is proposed to be raised by taxation. The other $05,000 will have to be raised by subscription, and those living along the line of the road, and receiving the greatest benefits, ace tbe persons who will have to raise It. Corydon and vicinity have already snbsorloed nearly $.‘>0,000, which is all that she can possibly raise, and the tax will be levied on these subscribers as well as
on others.”
—The Jefferson, Texas, Jimpleeute, of the 16th inetant, announces the arrival in that city, the night before, of Captain J. M. Daniel, Chief Engineer of the M.. E. P. and P. R. K .direct from Paris, France. The Jimpleeute adds: “The news he brings is as good as can be. The road Is a fixed fact, having triumphed over all oppoalllon, and has #10,000,000 to bank on. But that If this portion of the road Is bailt depends entirely on the actions of
bn)It depends entirely on
the people of this city and on the line ol
the road from here to Bowie coi that is asked Is that tbs people
lands for stock, and are required to give uo deed until the road ie completed to certain points, Cnless this is done, Caj tain Daniel has Instructions to goto wor at ones from Gaines’ Landing on the Mis-
sissippi.”
—Captain C. C. Genung, engineer for the Evansville and Crawfordsville Railroad, last week completed an inspection of all the bridges and culverts on the Evansville and Crawfordsville Railroad its entire length, and returned to the city on Saturday night. We learn that the bridges and culverts are all in an excellent condition at the present time, safe and sound. It is a custom to have the bridges on this road inspected by a competent man at least twice a year, and on the occasion of such visits of the inspector, all faulty timbers are ordered to be removed at once. This is one of the reasons that the Evansville and Crawfordsville Railroad has so few acidents [sic]. Another is that only careful engineers and conductors are employed. This will be pleasing intelligence to travelers in this day of railroad and steamboat accidents. To travel on a railroad without fear of being "dumped” over the bank, or of having the engine blow you into the middle of the next century, is a great comfort.— <Evansville Courier>. —The Cincinnati <Enquirer> of yesterday says: "In the case of Griffin, the engineer whose sleepy neglect of duty sent some score of human beings to death in
die Mast Hope disaster, an Intelligent tury finds him guiltless of manslaughter, wKn which be was charged. We have no Inoltnatlou to criticise this verdict. Tbe evidence In Court, we itelieve, substantially confirmed the statements published at tbe time. The accused was obliged to wait for another train to pass, and left or put his train in the way ol tlfat which was approaching. The result was a collision, with tbe usual accompaniments of utangliug and death. The jury rendered a verdlnt of acquittal, and a sympathizing crowd in court received It with ‘great applause.’ The case is onlr Important, ai present, as an indication of public opinion In relation to the personal responsibility of railroad men for the results of carelessness. The verdict seems to allow the largest liberty for recklessness in employes, but it does not exonerate tbe railroad companies from pecnnlary responsibilities, and In tbs Increased csre they will be compelled, for their »>wn interest under the circumstances, to exercise In the choice of servants, the public will still have some guarantee against the Indiscriminate exercises of
that liberty.

[Signed] “H. M. Bxnxnfcr, President. ‘‘September 28, 1869.’' The committee of twenty, appointed by the Oold Exchange, here worked steadily on too statements of the dealers since fear o’clock m., yeeterday, aad at eae o’clock r. a. only two statements remained to bo received, those of Smith. Oould A Martin, and Kalokorbockar k Co. The not result, as ascertained, U, that too dealers are short with too Cold Exchange Clearing House of about 110.600,000 of gold, whLk Smith, Ooald A Martin arc offering to sell them at 135. There appears ae doabt that tbe eomm itteewiil tuoeeed in effecting elaariogs on Friday's busiaoM, settlements being made oa the bads determined on yeeterday. The difference between 136 and too actual prioo will remain to be adjusted between the dealers themselves. AI a quarter before four o’clock the committee of twenty reported to the Bold Room in axeoutive soseion. They bad referred too making up of a statement from the Uskets of Smith, Uould, Martin A Co. to competent aoeountants. and requeoted to bo relieved from other duty. The report wae accepted, and it was agreed that the transactions ol Friday bo settled. The executive session of the Clearing House and Board adjourned till to morrow. The President of the Oold Room has been served with an injunction grouted on toe application ef Smith, Oould, Martin h Co., r*(training him from telling gold on their aoeoant ae oerding to the role. Tbe following resol ntlon was passed by toe New York Stoek exchange: Dealings In gold to be in toe Long Room until such time as the Ooveruing Committee (bail offset a plan establishing a Oold Room, under the direction of this Association. The Stock Exchange, later in the dev, passed a resolution to deal in gold la the Hall of the old Open Board of Stoek Brokern, dealings to begin to-morrow at ton o'clock. A meeting of theloint eommittoe representing the New York City Benk Clearing House and the New York Oold Exchange Bapk. was held in the parlor of the Clearing House. At this meeting, the Oold Exchange Bank, which made no olearings to-day, proposed to the Clearing House committee that the other banks should advanse twenty per cent, on toe 62,500,000 gold paid by tbe Oold Exchange Bank yeeterday and the day before in the settlement of their indebtedness at the Clearing House, which would enable them (the Gold Exchange Bank) to pay their entire in-
debtedness.
Tbe effect of this wontd be to release the other securities held by the Committee, and give the Oold Exchange Bank about 630.000 in currency. Several of toe banks had agreed to lurnlsh me%n> te carry out this proposition, when it was learned that the bank had been placed in the hands of a receiver, and consequently toe nego-
tiations were passed.
The iniunotion was granted by Judge Cardosa on tbe application of a person claiming to be a ereditor of toe bank. The application for a permanent receiver le returnable next Monday; meantime, Augustus Brown, ef the law firm of Brown, Hall A Vaaderpool, has been appointed temporary receiver. The associated banks agreed, in response to an application of a committee of twenty, to keep open to eenify checks, etc., nnUlfour o’clock this afternoon, and if necessary, until tig o’clock. The Stock Exohangp failures of Charles A. Meigs A Co., Julian A Co., and of Fullpr, Trent A Cox, were reported, and s’oexs were sold out for them under the rale. The latter 6rm are payiag differences, but were anable to take toe stocks they purchased yeeterday. It is believed that snspensions will prove but temporary. Tbe name of Lockwood A Co. was used freely on the street In the afternoon as having failed. It was finally stated that they made an asstgnent of tbeir affairs to laptain Acker.
