We • xpeck to see their audience made up of the better class of our citizens. They merit the patronage of all lovers of minstrel moslo and Ethlopean delineations.
We were yesterday put In possession ot some facts concerning s little romance, which will do very well for high and low life In this flourishing metropolis. Since the affair has leaked out, and Is being confidentially discussed In certain circles, It can be made but little, If any worse, by appearing In print. A few months ago a very pretty young girl came on from the East, expecting to take a position as saleswoman In one of our large dry goods stores, but through some misunderstanding she failed to procure the position she had in view. Being In a strange city, and her means limited, she was forced to seek some other kind of employment. After several days of weary search, the poor girl could find nothing better than a situation house servant in a private family She accepted the position, and by her Industry, good sense and amiable manners, soon gained the esteem and confidence of her mistress. She was allowed many little privileges not usually accorded to servant girls. One of these was the pleasure of receiving her company in the dining room several nights out of the
week.
It was observed that a very genteel looking young man had commenced paying his attentions to the girl, and seemed very much devoted to her. They took long walks at very unseasonable hours, when the earth was bathed In the soft, silvery light of the moon, and on their return, generally sat In the dining room until the small hours ot the red, rosy morn. The very prepossessing appearance of the girl attracted more than ordl nary notice on the street, and frequent Inquiries were made of the family concerning her. Her story was a simple one, and the members of the family generally gave It to those whose curiosity and Inquisitiveness led them to ask, In the girl’s own words. Finally the genteel young man was noticed going to the house by some of the neighbors, who at once instituted Inquiry as to what took him there so often. They were told that he was “waiting" on the servant maid. This created no small sensation, as the young man was known to them as a scion of one of the first faml lies of the city, and what was still more extraordinary, engaged to a daughter of one of our wealthiest citizens. It was thought at first that there must be some mistake about the Identity of the young man, but that point was settled beyond cavel a few nights after the development of the affair. He was seen to enter the gate shortly after dark, and stroll out with the pretty maid of the kitchen, three nights out of the week. < T course the ladies were shocked at this condition of things, and resolved to acquaint the young man’s atllanced with all the facts. A counsel was held, and a deputation seqt to the young lady to inform her that the young man in whom she was about to repose all that was dear to her In this life, was paying his devotions to a servant girl, and that the facts could be proven to her if she hud any doubts about the matter. The young lady was astonished, and expressed her unwillingness to believe a word of It unless she saw her unfaithful lover with ihe servant girl. She was invited to visit the house, aud a plot was laid to surprise the lovers In the dining room shortly after midnight, on Wednesday. Accordingly, the party, consisting of four married ladies and the young lady, stole softly to the door of the dining room, provided with a lamp to liebold the perfidious young gent and his enumoretta. The lady who had taken the niont active part in the affair, seized the door knob and turning It hastily, dashed the door wide open, and lot the rays of the lamp full into the room. But mirabite ilictut the proof was convincing entirely beyond their most sanguine expectations. The Injured young lady and those who had engaged themselves to lift the veil saw a good deal more than was necessary to carry conviction to the mind of the most skeptical of the young man's friends. It is unnecessary to add that tin* engagement has been severed, and the young man shoved out of the circle in which ho has heretofore moved. As for the poor, but pretty servant girl, she lost her situation, and at last accounts was In search of one more suitable to her
habils.
The New Freight llepot for Ihe Intlinnn Cenlrnl Railway. The new freight depot, now building for Ihe Indiana Central Railway Company—1\ C. A St. L. Railway, C. ('. A I. C. Division—to replace) the one blown down by the terrible wind storm on the night of the 19th of April last, is tapldly approaching completion, and is expected to be ready for occupancy, for freighting purposes, by the first of the coming mouth. The building occupies the site Of the old building, and when finished will be by far the handsomest structure for the purpose in the city, us well as the most substantial. Great attention has boon paid to securing a solid foundation for the walls so as to prevent Ihe possibility of the mortar being crumbled by the almost constant Jarring caused by passing trains. The foundation Is five feet below Ihe surface and Is formed of a concrete composed of broken stone solidly cemented together. Upon this Is built a stone wall, rising to the first layer of brick, one foot above the surface. The building will he sixty six feet wide by four hundred and ten feet long—ten feet longer than the Union Depot—and will contain platforms on either side, inside, eighteen feet wide, with the convenience ol a double track through the center. The walls, sixteen inches in thickness, will be of brick, the caps and projections about the doors, windows, etc., being laid with the celebrated Milwaukee brick. On each side of the building there will be twelve doors, each eight feet w ide, twenty-four feet apart, for the convenient reception and delivery of freight. The west elevation will present a two storied front, formed by a Mansard roof extending thirty feet in length of the main building. The design of this portion of the building contrasts In architectural beauty with the rest. The interior will not be completed until the business of \he road requires It. The cast end of the depot, for a depth of forty feet, will be three stories high, also covered by a Mansard roof, and will contain sufficient accommodations for all the offices of the company In this oily; the first or depot floor containing two large rooms on either side for the use of the Freight Agent and his assistants, the two upper stories being divided Into five rooms each, to be used by the Division Superintendent and bis aids, telegraph office, conductors’ room, etc. All these offices will be arranged with a view to proper ventilation, light, and the general comfort of their occupants. The entire building will be roofed with slate, the roof between the two elevations, east and west ends, to bo furnished with ventilator similar to that on the Union
Depot.
The whole construction will cost about 9C6,000 when completed, and will reflect great credit upon the architect, Mr. Joseph Hill, chief engineer of the com-
psny.
Jboo Catcsince the tatheritiea have determined upon establishing a pound for dogs, It would be well for the Mayor to appoint a dog catcher, whose duty It shall be to catch all dogs found oa the streets. The best way to perform this duty is to procure a wagon, and place in It an iron or wooden cage, with a door opening on the top. Then get a scoop net and attech It to a long pole. The dog catcher thus armed can slip up on ths unconscious canines, and throw the net over them, after which he has only to empty them in the cage. By this plan, the dog Is In no wise injured, and it is but the work of a minute. We have seen It operate successfully. The city will find It necessary to vest some person with authority to take up dogs, and hold him responsible for the fair and impartial performance of his duty. If boys are allowed to take up dogs, they will often invade the premises of citlxens, and cause many difficulties. The plan we suggest will be found the best and only method by which the law can be properly enforced.
