appears That the skull of the poor old man bad been broken In, hie body drag- ‘ to the spot where it waa found by the oga, and there covered with leaves, which had been washed off by the recent rains. No clue to the murderer waa Obtained, nor could the Instrument used In
the foul work be discovered.
Upon an examination of tbe pablu Qf the deoeaaetL acme deeds, ta* receipt*, and certificates of deposit In the New Albany Havings Bank were discovered, A man waa employed by the Coroner to take charge of the premises untU the murdered man’s relatives, if he had any, shall appear, or an administrator be ap-
pointed,
Upon inquiry of Mr. McDonald and Mr.
Davis, of the Havings Bank, we have learned some particular* in regard to this unfortunate old man. He baa been for a considerable time depositing email sums of money in the bank, the gross amount now to hla credit being $286 04. The last time he waa In the city waa on a recent cold day. Aa usual he waa dressed In rags, and wore a light summer hat. On going Into the bank to make a deposit, Mr. McDonald asked him why be did not take some of hla money and buy more oomfortable clothing, especially a hat. Tha old man aald his clothes and hat were aa good as be wanted, and he picferred saving hia money. Mr. McD. asked him what would become of his
rhen he died. Zllllngs replied be "supposed the sharpest would
get it." At one time be Iqtlmated that he had brothers and aiaters, In Pennsylvania, we believe, bis native State. He further said that he desired to go to New Orleans thla wlnUr, and was then looking for kflatboat on which he oonld work his passage. On being asked bow or with whom be lived, be aald be lived with the fomily on fola farm “when tb«y tyoM HI him; at other times alone. He was a very singular man, and had most singular ways, Increasing with his years and his lonely life.
It la not probable that the poor old man
had an enemy lu the world, and hla murder waa doubtless with ths sole view of robbery, It being supposed tbat he carried his money on bis person. It Is not likely, however, that he had any considerable aum, as be was In tbe habit of depositing his irouey as foat os be obtained It—a fact which his murderers did not know, as ha always kept his own counsel, to clue baa yet been found to tbe perpetrators of thil foul dee4, but we kone\he authorltlee of Clark county will do all In their power to bring tbe fiends to justice.
