A meeting wae appointed for ttys evening, Wednesday, at Bethel School House, Decatur Township. g£9~Monday evening a number of our citizens were present at a meeting at the Bates House to confer with Mr. Robison, out of the builders of Hewsy’a Patent Rlnka, In relation to erecting one in our etty. Mr. Robison gave a comprehensive description of the building, Ita mode of ventilation, preaervation of the Ice, hints regarding the general management of rinks, etc., which were very Interesting, and the sense of the meeting was that an institution of that kind was needed in our city, and immediate steps should be taken to Insure Ita organization. We are confident that this will be the opinion of every ciUzen who will Inform himself on the subject. Already this season rinks have been established in Hew York, Buffalo, Rochester, Columbus and Quines’, and in other dtiee the subject to before the people. We predict that In another year, few if any cities will be witbont a rink, and that next winter our city will be blessed with one. Another meeting Mill be held fit the Bates House this evening, and definite •teps will be taken. All are invited, and we hope to see the meeting well attended. Let ua have a rink by ail means. City Drainage.—The following to the report of the Special Committee on Drainage, made to the City Council Monday night: To the Honorable, the Mapor, and Common Council of Indianapolis, Indiana: Gentlemen- The undersigned, n Special Committee, to whom waa relerred the question, "Whst would, In their opinion, be the beat mode of drainage for the aoulhern part of the city?” respectfully report the following In answer to said question: The City Engineer kindly lurnlshedus with the distance, tall, and estimated coat of a bnck sewer, from what Is locally known as "Lake McCarty,” thence north along Delaware street to McCarty street, thence west along McCarty street to Bluff Road, thence northwestwardly along Russell street to Illinois street, th( nre north along Illinois strett to Pogue’s Ran; distance 8,300 feet, with a

tell ot 12 feet.

Also, from “Lake McCarty” west along Ray tirett to Fugue’s Run; distance 2^0u lett, with a fall of 23 feet. Also, from a point a little south of “Lake McCarty,” thence west along WUkena aireet to Pogue’s Run; distance 2,700 feet, with a

fall of 24 feet.

Your Committee having careftilly examined tbe several plans (and estimateu cost) proposed, whereby to drain the southern part of toecuy, have come to the conclusion the best mode to accomplish tbs purpose will be to build a sewer, commencing at “Lake McCarty,” thence west along Ray street to Pogue’s Run, this being the shortest distance, and will best accommodate the drainage of intersecting streets and alleys aa are now, or may be hereafter, graded. Your Committee, therefore, respectfully recommend the adoption by the Common Council of the following: Hesoleed, That the City Engineer be directed to advertise for aealed proposal* for tbe building of a brick sewer of not less than four (4) feet Internal diameter. The city reservlug the right to reject any and all auch bids. Seating Rink—Indianapolis to Have One.—A Skating Kink 1a comparatively a new Inatltntlon, not only In our city, bat in tbe United States, there being up to last winter but three in operation In this country. But tbe well attested popularity of «n»ni wherever they have been Instituted as well as their financial snceesf, has developed the fact that they are almost an in llspenslble Institution In every city. Last winter, rinks were erected In Cincinnati, St. Louis, Pittsburg, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Madison, and other cities, and in every instance they became popular beyond the expectation of their most sanguine advocates. Criminal Court.—Josh Mundln and George M. Tucker, were sentenced to tbe county 2)all ninety days each, for assault

and battery.

John Leroy, Wiliiaoi Johnson, and Joseph Bowers, were sentenced to three years in tbe penitentiary fur attempted robbery at the White River bridge last March. They plead guilty, and offered In extenuation the fact th it,they were drunk and bad beea persuaded into the robbery by a detective. Leroy’a mother, who is a respectable woman living In Boone County, was present, and wae terribly affected by ber son's disgrace. Richard Parnell, ebareed with robbery, waa admitted to ball In the turn of $300. tUTBy reference tu our columns, it will be aeea that E. B. Marttndale has been appointed agent of the Home Insurance Company, of New York. This company Is entitle 1 to prominent consideration on the part of our citizens. It hag paid them, In losses, near fifty thousand dollars, and is, to-day, atrengtb. ening a large share of tbe commercial Interests of the city. This company is particularly known for the satisfactory manner In which Us losses are met. It does not cost an honest man hia reputation to have a fire and hold one of their policies. All just claims are met in a spirit of fairness, with a due regard to “what to right.” Well Read.—An ingenious chemist In as. adjoining county addresses tbe following letter to a large coqyumer of red Ink In this city. He spells exceedingly: Dear Sir: As a good article of Read Ink to mupa s>*ui for I thought Iber Could Be Ho gralt harm In Sending you a Spesiment of the ink that 1 bav and Can msk In Eany quantity. I Remain Yours OBediently. Perronal.—Our young friend. Burns Magee, formerly connected with this paper, gave us a call yesterday. When Bufus waa an editor he was tolerably honeet; bat since he became a lawyer, and lives In Logansport, It is prudent to have an eye oa things when he’s around. At least we infer as much from tbe fact of a costly bronze turtle, which we tned as a paper weight, having disappeared about the lime he lelt us. That “torkle” will lie heavy on your conacioncs, young man. United States Court.—The Federal Court opened yesterday; the Grand Jury were empannelled, and explicitly charged by Judge MacDonald. The Bench delivered an opinion in tbo eaoo of the Funhhouaar distillery at Layfayette. There Were a largo number of Informer* claiming the moiety, but the Judge decided in favor of Chadwlek A Lamb, and tbo matter was retorted to a a alter In chancery for ed-

The new company will bo styled the Cleveland, Indianapolis and Cincinnati Railroad Company. This consolidation will not be adverse to the interests of Indianapolis, for the main line to from this cUnuAo Cleveland, two hundred and eightytw^ miles, while there are only slxty-tbree miles from Crettline to Colnmbas. Although L'loetni.ati to attll retained in the name, the road has no interest aouth of Columbus, except its connection with the Little Miami, which to now running east In connection with the Panhandle route. The tendency will be to bring more freight and travel this way, in order to have the benefit of the whole One, In preference to taking the southwestern trade by way cf Cincinnati as formerly. Tbe only objection we Mo to tho matter now 1a the removal of the popular General Passenger Agent, E. A. Ford, to Cleveland. Th* repair and ear shops will remain here and probably be Increased, giving employment to more ma. cblnltta than heretofore. Removal.—Mr. C. W. While th# freight business of this part af the line to not diminishing, that from Chicago 1s becoming enormous on the new line, and It became necessary to locate the General Freight Agent accordingly.
