Probably no one remedy has ever been known which cured so many and such dangerous cases as this. Some no human aid can reach; but even to those the Cherry Pec toral affords relief and comfort. Astor House, N. Y. City, March 5, 1856. Dactor Ayer, Lowell: I feel itadnty and pleasure to inform yon what yeur Cherry Pectoral has done for my wile. She had been five months laboring under the dangerous symptoms of consumption, from which uo aid we could procure gave her much relief. She was steadily failing, until Dr. Strong, of tills city, where we have come for advice, recommende . atrial of your medicine. We bless his kindness, as we do your skill, for she has recovered from that day. She Is not yet aa strong as she used to be, but is free from her cough, and calls herself well. Yours, with gratitude and regard. ORLANDO SHELBY, of Shelbyville. Consumptives, do not despair until you have tried Ayei's Cherry Pectoral. observed to visit the house of a married lady ou Eighth street, at a certain hour every day, when the curtains would he immediately drawn down, and all rings at the door bell for the next hour or 1 two, remain unanswered. Matters had been going on in this way for some time, until thia week, when some one sent an anonymous letter to the mother-in-law, stating that if herdaughter would watch the house referred to, that the husbaud could he surprised, like the man in the play In a “peculiarly perplexing predicament.” The moth-er-in-law and the wife responded to the note by repairing to the neighborhood of the house, and had the safts/uefiaa of ascertaining that tlie information was indeed true. The husbaud entered the dwelling of his fair friend, and soon all was quiet-

ness about the house.

Prol>ably the Same hand that wrote the note to the mother also penned one to thelmabaud of the woman who received the visits, demanding his immediate return home, and he promptly complied, under the supposition that sickness or death awaited his arrival. He made his presence known by loudly ringing the bell, aud rapping at the door, aud soon the frightened druggist was seen rushing from the rear door of the dwelling, saw everything but his under garments, and carrying his boots and pants in his hand! It is need leas to say that a domestic scene of thrilling and painful interest to all parties followed, which we will not attempt to discribe. The Indignant wife at first fainted, but on recovering became infuriated, and would not be uomforted; but iiumedalely packed up her private wardrobe, aud returned home with her mother. She has since commenced proceedings for a divorce. The gossips of the “West Ena,” in the region of Baymiller and Freeman streets, have had their fill of scandal over the affair for the last three or four days.—

Cincinnati Gazette.

Tbe Home* of the Poor In New York. The Tribune says it is estimated that in the first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth wards only, of that city, there are about four hundred and fifty lodging houses of a very inferior character. The average number of male and female lodgers every night throughout the year is said to be about twenty-five, or a total of eleven thousand

two hundred and fifty persons.

Three thousand pay as high as three cents per night for the privileges peculiar to a lodging house at that price; four thousand pay six cento; and the remaindei pay twelve cents per night.— Thus, about $90 for three cent beds, $240 for six cent beds, and $500 for 12 cent beds—or a total of $840, is paid every night for the meanest kiad of accommodation in the name of lodgings. The amount annually, excepting every seventh night, which, in most cases, is thrown in by the magnanimous proprietor, is not less than $264 - 000. More than half of this sum, or at least $150,000 of this amount, besides large quantities of clothing and victuals, are procured from people who pay no more than a shilling a night for

their lodging or rents.

A large number of three cent places are under ground; the accomodations being “a kind of fire in some corner or other,” “several shavings covered over with fabrics of unquestionable character, the relics of chair or stool, and mayhap a table of unquestionable origin.” The “light of the world” is occasionally admitted by a door, or 1 if anything should steel or otherwise abstract the bundle of shavings from tbe window, then, for a time, light gets iu by its legitimate channel. The ventilation of the premises need not be described. In the sixpenny houses, shavings, straw, and various other collections of material constitute the resting point of lodgers. In many of them the aspect is much the same as that presented by the forecastle of an English vessel. Hammocks may be observed slung between the sides of the apartment, while regions of darkness lay beyond human scan, the interior of which the boldness of exploration only would be allowed to describe. The shilling, or twelve cent houses, are generally on a more respectable scale. The sheets on the bed are not allowed to be cleiuied ofteuer than once in aix weeks. Not more than four persons are expected to sleep in one bed at the same time, and five or six beds may be found in some rooms Urge enough for two persons only, under ordinary circumstances. In many of these houses rum is sold, much to the sacrifice of tbe

community.
