It* constant nse In my practice and my family for the last ten years has shown It to possess superior virtue* for the treatment of these complaint*. ■BEN KNIGHT, M. D
A. B. MORTLEY, Esq., of Utica, N. Y., writes: “I have used y nr Pectoral myself and in my family ever since you invented it, and lielieve it to be the best tee- It cine for its purpose ever put out. With a bad cold 1 should sooner pay twenty-five dollars for a bottle than do without it, or take any other remedy.” Group, Whooping Cough, Infiuenaa. Spat Non zld. Miss., Feb. 7, 1856. Brother Ayer: I will cheerfully certify your Pecto* al is the best remedy for the cure of Whooping Gough, Oroup. and the chert diseases ef children. We of your fraternity in the South appreciate your skill, and commend your medicine to our people. HIBAM CON \LIN, M. D. AMOS LEE, Monterey, la., writes, 3d Jan., 1856: “I had a tedious influenza, which confined m* in doors six weeks; took many medicines without relief; finally tried your Pectoral by the advice of our clergyman. The first dose relieved the soreness in my throat and lungs; less than one-half the bottle made me completely well. Your medicine* are the cheapest as well as the best w« can buy, and we esteem you Doctor, and your remedies, as the poor man’s friend.” Asthma, Phthisic, and Bronchitis. West Mxhchxstbr, Pa., Feb. 4.1856. Sir: Your Cherry Pectoral is performing marvellous cures In this section. It has relieved several from alarming symptoms of consumption, and la now curing a man who has labored under an affection of the lungs for the last 44) years. HENRY L. PARKS, Merchant. A. A. RAMSEY writes Si I have giving ease and relief to consumptive patients, or curing such as are curable.” We might add volumes of evidence, but the most convincing proof of the virtues of this remedy is found in its effects upon trial. CONSUMPTION. Probably no one remedy has ever been known which cured so many and such dangerous cases as this. Some no human aid can reach; but even to those the Cherry Pec toral affords relief and comfort.

ET Harper’s last Weekly has a picture caricaturing the congressional investigation of the $87,000 business. Three men with bags full of dollars are seen traveling off in the distance—a lamb is in the front ground, and several gentlemmw ’HrukUJg ouwn Its throat »o a«o what UICJ can diadover about the missing money when the following dialogue takes place: “Ba-a! Ba a! Black Sheep Have you any wool?” ”Yes, Sir, I have Three bag* full. One fo. the Senate, One for the House, And one for a little Newspaper mouse.” From the New York In dependant. Nome Speculations on Dress. Of fabrics, whose chief value consists in their power of producing the effects and contrasts referred to, the McFlimsey family must plead guilty to a vast accumulation in excess of the amount required for the perfect gratification of taste.— The fact that any article of dress, however beautiful or appropriate, depreciates in value in the eyes of a woman of ihahion alter it has once been publicly displayed, proves that, to this class, clothing fabrics possess an element of value totally distinct from their capacity to meet tbe demands of the physical or esthetic nature. It may be said that novelty in dress adds attractiveness to the perootulle. But we appeal to all lovers to testify whether tbe garment by which the form of a woman has been often graced, does not grow doubly beautiful and bsautilying through the influence of association; while the element of personal attractiveness thus indicated is totally sacrifled by kaleidoscopic changes of apparel. The motive, then, which prompts the largeet expenditures of fashionable people for articles of dress, is yet to be considered. There exists a large class, especially in trading communities, where fortunes are suddenly acquired, who are conscious that their chief claim to public regard depends not upon personal worth, but upon the material resources of which they are representatives. They desire, therefore, to keep the fact which peculiarly entitles them to consideration constantly before the eyes of others in connection with their own persons, that thus their countenances may shine with the borrowed light of an implied ’’specie reserve.” The appearance of the millionaire commands a certain kind of respect wherever he is known. His wealth ia inseparably associated with bis person, since his hand or voice may at any time issue a promise to pay; his wife, on the other h&nd, endeavors to secure a share of the prestige to her own person, by loading herself with articles of dress, representing a great cost in a small compass. Tbe motive is the Same which induces the Cadre chief, when he wishes to produce an impression upon bis foreign visitors, to attach every description of portable commodities to bis person without regard to considerations of taste, comfort or decency. We may instance, also, the Sandwich Island chief, who came to dine with Capt. Cook, exulting in the possession of a ’’full dress” costume, which consisted entirely of a pair of boots and standing collar. The boots and collar were an absolute inconvenience to tbe wearer; had every native on the island been supplied with similar pharaphemalia, the peculiar value of the articles would hare been destroyed, and the chief’s quondam treasures been thrown away aa worthless. It needs little argument to show that the barbaric accumulation of costly surroundings on the person of the female, beyond the requisitions of taste and comlbrt, no more adds to her personal consideration than the costliness of the wig adds to the value of the wig-block on which it stands. Tbe woman who wastes money in dress with the evident design of demonstrating her command of material resources, attracts to her person no favorable regard except from sycophants. But even granting that the defiire could be gratified by such display, we still assert that cosuv clothing would be unprofitably employed for this purpose, rinse a certified bank check, conspicuously worn, could be made to represent a much greater value than could be carried about in the shape of dress, while the check costs nothing to produce, sod is convertible at the necessities of tbe holder! The fashionable class of the community, then, are justly liable to tbe charge of vest extravaince, or waste of resources, in the matter of ess. It is frequently alledged that the extravagances of tbe rich are beneficial to the artisan classes If this be true, over-expenditures for dress may not involve an utter lota to society as they do to the individual. Acting upon this principle, the governments of Europe encourage a constant change of fashions and a lavish expenditure for costly fabrics among (heir wealthy
subject*.
But such measures only serve to retard temporarily the natural flow oflabor from overstocked mmkets, by offering an artificial, and therefore temporary means of subsistence to a surplus pop aiaaou who are reailywanted In new and undeveloped countries. When the individual bee accumulated capital, after his immedlsts and pcospsetive wants have been supplied, it knot nsentry for him to invent methods of distributing hie surplus for tbe good of society. Let such capital become toots; then taking its natural oo«t, ft seeks a bonowsr in the best market, which ft a new country ; there ft stimulates enthe rtsmsnd for labor.
