If the plan of the old Northern lines to keep down the newer and more direct routes by hum bugging them into an arrangement by w hich both shall discriminate all efforts is carried out, thus leaving the old and well combined lines in the quiet engagement of traffic, for which they could not much longer compete on equal terms; we think the Pennsylvania Central, as well as our own lines will show a rapid relative decline. We have not yet seen the proceedings of the great Cleveland Convention, but the very place of holding it makes us look for a Chicago and Cincinnati direction of business. When will our Railroad men learn that the Northern lines get from us all they can and give nothing that can be kept away, and that they never go into a Convention which they cannot control ? *

Atheneum.—Mrs. Meeker made her first appearance before an appreciative au tence on Saturday night last. We shall indulge in no ehtbonte criticism of this lady’s performance. In details perhaps she is not equal to Miss Logan, Mrs. Julia Dean Hayne, or Miss Dora Shaw, in “Julia,” but her whole delineation leaves the most pleasing impression upon the auditor. And this is, after all, the true test of genius. This was what distinguished Mrs. Siddons, Rachael, Garrick, John Kemble, the elder Kean and Booth. We therefore hesitate not to pronounce Mrs. Meeker one of the greatest actresses thq$ have ever appeared on our boards. She appears again to-night. She is most admirably supported by Stetson, Chapman, Mrs. Chapman and the rest of the company. Lucretia
Borgia is the play.
CT We have received “The Pittsburgh Quarterly Trade Circular,” Vol. 1, No. 1. It contains a condensed reprint of “Pittsburgh as It Is, by George H. Thurston.” The Pittsburghers are resolved that if advertising can do them any benefit it shall be done. In certain respects—as a manufacturing city—Pittsburgh competes with all rivals on the American continent, and her trade with the Mississippi valley yearly increases. From the statistics in the pamphlet before us we have the proof of her prosperity. ET The splendid silver trumpet presented to the Relief Fire Company No. 1, by the Insurance Companies and citizens of Indianapolis, for their efficiency during the year 1855-56, has been betatifully engraved by E. R. Reed, one of the most accomplished artists, in this line, in the West. We saw this magnificent trumpet on Saturday last, in possession of the President of the Relief Company, Mr. J. J. Bisbing, and it was a subject of uni venal admiration.
