Honors to Stanley.

Henry M. Stanley recently made a speech defending

Ijih

conduct towards

the Bambirch natives, for warring against whom he has been severely criticised by humanitarians. He was frequently applauded, and Lord Houghton spoke kindly of him on behalf of the English people.

Previous to the dinner, fit which this speech was made, Mr. Stanley was visited by a deputation of the Koyal Geo-

nlerford

nical Society. Mr. Stanley gave Sir Alcock, the President, to understand that the society mast take for granted that he had acted*while ii Africa honestly and honorably, T*f *7 had any doubt on that point,o/& iljf )ion that he had been wantonly'murdering negroes, he Would prefer not to receive the deputation. This frank and manly statement was met in a similar spirit. Col. Yule, of the Geographical Society, opposed extending any courtesies to Mr. Stanley until he had vindicated himself from the charge of cruel slaughter referred to. On this subject Mr. Smalley, the Tribune correspondent, says, "Tlie savages of Bambirch—the savages who shortly before had beey foiled In an effort to kill Stanley himself—had murdered even Stanley's allies—a friendly chief among them.* If he had allowed this outrage to pass unavenged, what would have been thought of him by the Africans themselves They would have said, 'This man is a fool he allows his friends to be murdered, and does not avenge them it will be safe to destroy him.' His own men would have said also: blaster is a fool: he does not protttet those who serve him we shall all lie killed if we follow him turther.' News of that kind spreads with rapidity. Fresh foes, emboldened by his apparent timidity, would have sprmig up at over step. It is probably not too much to say that though he had many other battles before him, he owes his safe return to that one act of courage and decision. Shch, at any rate, I believe to be his own conviction, and I must say I think Stanley's judgment of the state of pnblic opinion in Central Africa better worth taking than that of sundry dissenting members of the Royal Geographical Scpety thoqsi»nds of miles away. -A

Stop the Leaks. I

Wherever they may be found and on every farm thev are numerous,«if-not watchfully guarded against. Is the corn yet in the field? If so, here is a leak of magnitude. Squirrels, rata and perhaps two legged vermin are pegging away at it and the waste is all the more important because it is continuous. A rat antl burglar proof crib j^, the only secure ^ore-house. I-

Are vour tools nicety cleaned and laid away under cover or are they lying loowlv around, covered with mnd and rust4? This is a leak which should be stopped forthwith, for not only dollars and cents are involved but bodily strength -also. Get everything under cover, well cleaned and ready for future «?*.

Is vour stock provided with comfortable shelter from cold winds? If not, stop this enormous leak without loss of time, making them as comfortable as possible. A few days exposure during the severe weather of winter will leak away more than all the gains you have made for a vear.

Have yon settled with your merchant for your" advances for the test year, or are you still adding to your obligations? If so, you should make all possible haste ami a'nv required sacrifice to stop this leak. Your ship will surdy founder, leaving vou helpless and destitute, unless you attend to this important matter without moment's delay.

Are von providing for the education of Voftr children and endeavoring to keep puce wirhthe march of imprqrtement youwelf Do yon read, do yo« reflect? jf vou are neglecting these important dune*, you may rest assured thai this leak, if none other, wUI prove your rein. Education ia the corner stone of success in agricultural s£nd all other pursuits.^

A canal across the state of Michigan is talked of. Did it ever occur to you what the meaning of "No cards," and "No cake," appended to a marriage announcement means? It is simply the exclamation of the editor thrown in, in a spiteful way, to show that he was not remembered,

If your local paper doesn't exactly suit you don't go to running it down and abusing the editor, but go to work and help him him make it better by furnishing your local itemizer or the editor-in-chief with such items of interest as happen to come under your observation.

The Wayne County Journa) recently printed an article headed "Talk About Stoves." There has been a good deal of talk about .-stoves in Rome this fall, but most of it has been of a confidential nature and not calculated for public print. Our folks mix their stove talk up.toc much with Calvinism.—Rome Sentinel.

A North Hill lady writes to this office inquiring if "paragraphers ever go heavenr* Good land, woman, they nevergo anywhere. They don't get a chance. The "religious cblumn" in a secular

per is usually a very unsatisfactory department to most readers. There is nothing the average man thinks less abou^ and at the same .time feels more "touchy" in regard to. than his religious belief, though he himself may not be able to explain what it is. Therefore, ten men will read the religions column (often edited by a semi-infidel) in a secular newspaper, 'and nine of them will become more or less offended at what is there printed.

Tfeather Signs.

Many of our farmer friends have certain signs by which they cl»3m that they can foretell the character of the coming winter. Among them are the character of the corn husks, thin ones indicating a mild winter and thick ones the reverse. A plentiful supply of acorns and other nuts indicating anard winter and a short crop a light, open one. An unusual number of spiders during tine foil are taken as harbingers of a mild winter, and their absence the reverse. On the other hand ad immense supply of caterpillars indicate a hard and severe winter. When squirrels are idle and listless it betokens a mild winter, but much business on their hands indicates a hard winter. If the breastbone of a goose is white, we will have a mild winter, bnt if it is dark, look .out for deep snows and cold weather. If the ground-hog goes into winter quarters early it is to he considered as a token of a severe winter and we might extend the list much further. In looking over the many country papers which pass through our hands we have kept a record of these weather prognostics tors, and give as a result from the reports made to said papers that in Greene county they will have a mild winter, because the huiiks are very thin in Washington the winter is to be mild, because spiders are plenty near by in Allegheny, they are to have it very severe, because the breastbone of a goose was very dark in Lancaster it will be severe, because the squirrels are busy, but in the adjoining county of York, it will be mild, because the wood chucks have already gone into winter quarters in Delaware county, the husks are thick, and a hard winter mav he looked for, but in Backs it will be light, because foreet nuts are scarce in Salem county, N. JL caterpillars are plenty and indicate a hard winter but across the river is New Castle county, Del- they may expect a very mild winter from the absence of nuts. And yet any one of these can famish positive proof that his theory has been proven correct many times. The trouble usnal1 ly is that persons observe the eases in which these or other signs prove correct, hot foil to note the eases in which it foils. ^___ee=_-_.

It is the duty of every man to vote —not to hang round ward and district pot houses discussing the merita of candidates but he should become acquainted with their Qualifications by careful observation, ana when once convinced of their purity of character and honesty of purpose to make every honorable effort to place them in nomination, and aid in their election. The first duty is to attend the primary meetings. While respectable men excuse their absence from the caucus on various pretexts, the loafers, the vicious, and the idle bummers are out in force they pack the convention, name their own committees, and lay the egg which hatches much future trouble and deviltry.
