!* Ver^ Discouraging at DreNOnt—IIiiMinoRH Failures of the Week. New Your, March 21.—R. <>. Dun & Co.'s weekly review of trade today saya: Movement toward better things is still the exceptlui. There is better business in shoes ami small industries and there has been a squeezing of short sellers in cotton. But the general tendency of industries and prices is not encouraging, and those who w re most hopeful a month ago are still waiting, not so hopefully, for the expected recovery. Causes of continued if >"-sion are not wanting. Bad veathof has cut off much business, 1‘speeially in country districts. Some failures of consequence have caused especial eutilion. The root of the business is that in many departments nu n bought more and produced more, when prices were mounting and everybody was rushing to buy last year, 'hail they have yet been able to sell. That the buying was of a nature to anticipate actual eon - sumption many months, they were fully warned, bat they ii.'.d i,loro.hope than ob icrvati'm and went on piling up
goods.
Some are: engaged today m the same hopeful anticipation of a demand which has not yet appeared. The woolen mills With prices already k .need below'last years lowest average, and wool 5.3 per cent higher than it was then, are not gelling bin mess enough to keep t!i works in operation. Clothiers have taken main foreign goods; they have failed to market all they produeou last fall and they have t > carry a host of re toilers whine stocks are not yet sold. A sharp decline iu the pri es of cotton goods is the comment of mills on rising cotton. (In ids now average lower than
May 1895.
The iron industry shows but a sligli’ average decline in prices, as combinations still insist upon the highest priceof last year, and the demand is naturally curtailed. The market in wheat has been weak though rather sbignaut, but the weight of facts is feit as we-.eru receipts for the three weeks of March have 8,982,4»1 bushels, e.ja inst 5,<124,929 last year. Atlantic exp its (Hour included) also shows a decrease amoneting fo 1,084,954 bushels for three weeks against 5,007,018 last year. The movement of corn eontmiles very hu,'e and prices have declined 1 cent for cash. Failures for the week w i re 201 in tho Unilcd Ffates against •.l.sle-t yi:irund 49 in Canada against 35 last year.
