notly shown in our case last Suuday. A'ier a month of comparative inactivity j and peace, tUOUp-h of creat rirnr-tif-il ! service in protecting a hospital of eleven huudred sick and wounded, besides Government stores, we were wakened up last Saturday evening by our scouts bringing in news that McCullough, with 5,0W men, had come dowu the Tensas Kiver, and was marching on us. Our little camp was speedily broken up, and, uuder the direction of Col Owen, we commenced making a small fort from cotton bales that were once used by the transports in runr.ing the blockade, and now lay on the landing it beiug his intention to give them "the best in the shop" anyhow, and then trust 'to luck lor the rest The luck came sooner than was expected, in the shape of the steamer Forest Queen, from Grand Gulf, bound to Warrcntou. By her the Colonel sent for assistance; and at eleven P. M. we lay down on our arm6, to snatch a few hours of sleep before the enemy came up. By daylight on Sunday morning, May 31, the contrabands were coming from every direction with the news that the - ' 1 c i . let arrived from Warrenton to assist us. The ball was opened by her shelling the woods and fields on our left After some ten or twelve shots, our pickets immediately in front were driven in by the enemy s advance. She moved up opposite us, firing over our heads a couple of shots in that direction, which brought a reply from three howitzers the enemy had planted there. Their shells fell short, and only served, in connection with the wild screaming of our gunboat shells, to frighten the wits out of the darkies, some three or four hun dred of whom had taken retuge with us. At this time the Forest Queen came in from Warrenton, having been sent to bring us up to that point (We had been under marching orders to rejoin our brigade before Vicksburg for some days, but could not get transportation.) The Colonel gave orders lor tne negroes and baggage to go aboard first; and such a scrambling never was seen as they made. Each one had a bundle as big as themselves on tneir neaas, ana half the women a baby besides. Twenty minutes sufficed for them all to get aboard, when the regiment, under the immediate superintendence of our gal lant Colonel, marched on as steadily as if going out to dress parade, followed by Col. Owen, ne caring not lor tiimseii i until he first saw his men in safety, as he always does. The plank was then ' drawn in, and, moving rapidly out in the stream, we were soon out of the reach of the enemy. Tho rlmio-er nf our riOR'.t.inn. frnm wtiicn we so happily escaped, is shown by the following facts: First, we had no artillery; second, the river was so low, the levees (there were two here running paralel with each other) protected the rebels lrom the trun uoat lire; the rebels outnumbering us ten or twelve to one could easily have captured us by a single charge, oue bale ot cotton not being much protection, or by bring ing their howitzers to the -d .Levee, lwe were behind the first) could have shelled us until we surrendered without expoKino- a. m nfle man to our hrc. Cndr such circumstances, getting away with all our ba"--aie aud not a man lost wo considered a brilliant affair. Arriving at Warrenton we rested a day and then a iouldering arms struck the trail of our Brigade at daylight the next morning. The route lay alone the chain of hills which formed the outer line of the Vicks' burg Fortifications. Beeinnin" at Warrpnton it extended in k in h. circle to the
mouth of the Yazoo Kiver. 1 h s is now territory ot 6b" AW, and eastot the Kocky all in our possession and forms the base Mountains, to be known as the Pacific of Grant's operations. "Still, in spite of all I have said, it by no means the truththat our men aro a parcel of cowards and poltroons. The y are as brave as the average of people quite as brave as our enemies are. But we don't fight in such a commonseuse way as they do. Shall I tell you how one of our lines of battle engages? They go in in fine style, stc-adilv, in a good line and without any flinching, halt at what is held to be a desirable point, aud at the command commence tirin", standing, kneeling or lying down, aa may be ordered. "Then, as in all their previous training, they have been taught to load and fire as rapidly as possible, three or four times a minute; they go into the busi ness with all fury, every man vying with his neighbor as to the" number of cartridges he can ram into his piece and spit out of it The smoke rises in a minuteor two so you can see nothing where to aim. The noise is deafening and confusing to the last degree. The impression gets aroJTTio4ffVrrrfs"Ri;i ugaieu. Una1 won't go off, and the cartidges begin to give out The men have become tired with thir furious exertions and the ex- I citement and din of their own liriug, and without knowing anything about the effect produced upon the enemy, very likely having scarcely had one glimpse of the enemy at all, begin to think they have fought about enough and it is nearly time to retire.' Meanwhile the enemy, lying quietly ahurdred or two yards in front, crouching on the ground or behind trees, answer our fire very leisurely, as they get a chance for a good aim, about one shot to our three hundred, hitting about as many as we do, and waiting for the wild tornado ofam munition to pass over their heads, and when our burst of fighting is pretty much over they have ! only commenced. j "They probably rise and advance upon us with one of their unearthly yells as they see our fire slackens. Our boys, finding that the enemy has survived such an avalanche of fire as we have rolled in upon him, couclude he must be invincible, and being pretty much out of ammunition, retire. Now, if I had charge of a regiment or brigade, I'd put every man in the guard house who could be proved to have fired more than twenty rounds in any one battle; I wouldn't let them carry more than their cartridge box full (forty rounds), and have them understand that that was meant to Jast j them pretty much through a campaign, j and in every possible way would endeav- ' or to banish the Chinese style of fighting, with i Bfticfl onH emnba, ftnrl imitfltp rather the backwoods style of our opponents."' YaUandigliauTs Scheme lo Destroy the l iiiuii and Su'nei t Democratic (.Old 1II1M nt. That our democratic friends may understand what they are called upon to indorse, when asked to cast their votes for Vallandigham, we give below the leading points of the resolution introduced by him in the House, February 7, 1861. The United States are to be divided j into four sections, one consisting of the '. States of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, lhode island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey'and Pennsylvania, to be known as the North; one consisting of the States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Kansas, to be known as the West; the States of Oregon, California. and all new States erected out of were to be necessary to the election of j to noui ineir ojjuxu at year .
NUMBER 221
Article XVX provides that any Stat may secede with the consent of the Legislatures of all the States of the section to which the State proposing ,to secede belongs. This provision is palpably in the interest of the rebels, allowing, as it would, the secession of the whole South in a body, but refusing the privilege to a BWPe. State to secede from its section. This summary will give the voters of Ohio some idea of the principles they are called on to support The scheme involves not only the disintegration of the Union, but the absolute subversion of Democratic principles. We have published the preamble and resolutions twice at full length. If any are incredulous upon the subject, they can satisfy their doubts by reference to the file of the Congressional Globe, of Feb. 7, 1861. No man who, in the face of such a record, will support Vallandigham, is ether a Union man or Democrat HARDWARE, &c. HAEDW1EE. ILLS, KELLOGG & CO, (SI&. BIO MILL SA.W,) (SUCCESSORS TO C. 6.
