housing arrangement at the Joe L. Isch farm. Here a heated water fountain, hay and self feeding horizontal pole type silo were placed outside the loafing shed. This will be Joe's third winter for outside feeding. Much the same arrangement was seen on the Fred Moser farm operated by Harry Gerber

In addition the tour'&embers saw two Purdue type bay feeding racks and a pole type lean-to. A noon lunch was served at the Co-op building in Monroe. At the first stop after lunch the group was shown a pole type machinery center with a corn crib built into one end on the Omer Merriman farm. For the last stop a co-op milking parlor and pipe line milker was seen on the Jim Smith farm. The day was closed with a milking demonstration on the Smith farm. J Retired Farmers Need More Income Economist Makes Farm Saving Study WASHINGTON, (INS) — A recent study indicates that a farm couple needs three or four times as much income to retire comfortably than they would have required 50 years ago. , , Walter Barr, an extension economist at Ohio State university who has made a study of farm savings, cities very obvious reasons for this situation—namely, the rising stand dard of living and lowered value of the farm dollar. Whereas a farm couple could have lived well in 1905 on the income from an investment of $25,000, Barr estimates that it now takes from 175,000 to SIOO,OOO. Yet the economist contends that these figures are not at all unreasonable. He points out for example, that a good 160-acre farm in Ohio might be worth anywhere from >30,000 to $50,000 or more, depending on the amount of cropland it includes. This total could be boosted, he says, by another $15,000 allowance for livestock and equipment __ According to Barr's theory, good land management should return the farm operator about five per cent interest on his investment Thus if the total investment is $75,000, he figures the return should be $3,750. Now that social security benefits have been extended to farmers, Barr says it may be possible for some operators to retire on smaller investments than was formerly the case. He goes on, however, to point out a situation that exists in many states other than Ohio —that many farmers do not have satisfactory investments to retire in old age. In this connection, one witness made an interesting suggestion to the senate agriculture committee during its recent tour of the country to study farm problems.
