"WORKING THE FLOOR,
Elder J. W. Carney Turns Up as a Tull Fledged Minister in the Christian Oimroti.
Everyono will remember the case of Kev. J. W. Carney, who was jailed here on the day of the Farmers' Alliance picnic for being drunk and disorderly. The Eldor was at that time posing as an expounder of tho word according to tho Nowlight Baptist interpretation. When tho caso which was made against him in tho Mayor's court was made public Carney's followers around over tho county lost faith in him and he finally declared his intention of emigrating to Illinois. Ho loft Montgomery county accordingly and was not hoard from again until yesterday when Elder Maxwell recoived a letter from D. O. Coy, of Taylorsvillo, Ind., stating that Carney had boon admitted there to tho conference of tho Christian church and is now presiding over a flourishing flock near
Taylorsvillo. In some way it had leaked out, as such things always do, that Carney's career in this part of the world had not been exactly what it should bavo been. Chargos wero preferred ngainst him but Carney entered a general nnd swooping denial challenging any and all to provo ought against, him. Elder Maxwell was requested to forward all tho evidence against him and this morning forwarded to Taylorsvillo tho entry on the Mayor's docket and tho articles on tho case which were published in Tin: Jouunai, at the time. It is altogether probable that Eldor Carney will shortly ooaso to exhort in Eastern Indiana.
The Deliberations of the Doctjrs. The Montgomery County Medical Society mot in tho court house yesterday afternoon and held a most interesting and profitable sossion. There was a large attendance and there was every indication that the society is growing in usefulness. Dr. Morrison, of Indianapolis, spoko on "The Clinical Aspects of Malignant Tumors Dr. T. F. Leech, of this city, on "Malignant Tumors," and Dr. Vinnedgo, of Lafayette, on "Clinical Notes and Observations as to tho Management of Malignant Diseases.' The last address was by Dr. Potter, of Indianapolis, whoso subject was "SelfLimitation and Artificial Immunity and Protection from Infectious Diseases." Ho also discussed tho Koch treatment of tuboreulosis. Tho following resolutions wero adopted by tho society:
Wiiriieas Death has entered thchomo of our brother, Dr. E. H. Cowan, and taken an only and boloved son, therefore
Rcxalretl That we, his professional brothers, in mooting assembled, extend to our brother and his estimable wife our heart felt sympathies in their severe bereavement. lienolved Ti, I wcrotary of our so cioty bo instr:i. ted to tr.'T.imit a copy of the above t' MI iron* of tho deceased.
Faust To-night.
Reeves' English Opora Bouffo Company presented thoir original satire on G-Kitho'8 immortal poeui "Faust" at tho Grand last night to a crowded house, and to sny that tho audionco wero pleas ed would bo expressing it mildly in deed.
Tho satire is written by Mr. Monroe, the well-known Boston nowspaper man, and is really excellent, tho linos sparkle with wit and are interpreted by a 00111 pany far above tho average.
Tho music is all that could bo expect ed from the genius and taste of Prof. Zinn, tho composer and musical director.
Tho chorus is strong nnd is qpmposed of by far tho prettiest girls that have visited tho city for Bome tinio.
Tho satire is devoid of nil that is coarse and common, and wo are pleased to note that some of our most respected society ladies wore among the audionce last night. Tho Journal extonds con gratulations to Mr. Reevos and hopos that our citizens may soon again have the pleasure of seeing thoir pleasing en tortainment.—Lincoln Journal.

The Book Eocepticn.
Tho book reception nt tho Y. M. C. A. rooms last night was quitoa success, forty good valumos being added to the library and ovor SI'2 in money cloarcd. Tho literary programme was tho chief feature of the ovening and was admirable in every particular- Tho Athenian Orchestra opened by a very good musical solection, nnd Miss Alma McCluer followed with a beautiful soprano solo entitled, "Wako, Robin, Wako." A trio of students, Hunter, Rhoados and Richardson, thon enhtivated tho audienoo by a selection given on banjn, guitar and mandolin. Thoy were followed by Miss Pet Carr in hor Delsnrto posing. This performance has received flattering com ment in The Joukjjal before, and we would only say that this feature magnificent. Little Belle Gilkey, Burlington, Iovn, astonished and pleas ed ovoryono by hor phon lmeial' nor formanco on the piano and w:.d followed by Miss Louio Brown who delivered stirring recitation. Aftor another se lection by tho orchestra the audionco adjourned for ico croum and tho reinaiu dor of tho evening was pleasantly passed about tho spacious rooms of tho associn tion.

Malignant Diphheria.
Ono milo enst of the city thoro is a neighborhood which Dr. Taylor yoster day placed in quarantine. Several fam ilies thero are down with diphheria and a very malignant form of it. Yesterday afternoon, Forest, the fivo-year-old son of A. W. Hood and wife, ,died and his elder brother is not expected to live, Several other casos in the snmo neigh borhood are very likely to prove fatal and the health officers are taking every precaution to prevent tho disease get ting out of the neighborhood and to this city, whore it would prove a terrible thing. The funeral of the little Hood boy was strictly private and the fami lies in which tho disease has manifested itsolf aro not allowed to mingle with the neighbors who have as yot escaped This is something more than a scare and parents would do well to look after tho health of thoir children and be extromoly cautious about exposing them.

There is only ono way to cure deafness, nnd that is by constitutional remedies. DeafnesB is caused by an inflamed condition of tho mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tubo gets inflnmed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, aud unless tho inflammation can bo taken out and this tubo restored to its normnl condition, hearing will be destroyed forovor nine cases out of ten are caused by cntarrli, which is nothing but an inliamod condition of the mucous surfaces. Wo will give One Hundred Dollars for nny case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that wo cannot cure by taking Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars free.
