U.S. and Jordan can use a break

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) It could have been a costly second straight victory, that 7269 decision the U.S. men scored over Brazil in the Pan American Games basketball tournament. Michael Jordan, moments after scoring 17 of his 27 points in the last 10 minutes, sat outside the U.S. dressing room with his left knee encased in ice. But he and trainer Don Lowe minimized its importance. “It’s a tendinitis injury from a long way back. I jumped down hard on it and aggravated it last night. It won’t be a problem. I wouldn’t miss playing now for anything,” the 6-foot-5 North Carolina All-American said after Tuesday night’s game. “He’ll be ready Saturday,” said Lowe, Syracuse University’s trainer who is working with the American team. Fortunately for Jordan, the United States does not play the next three days, facing host Venezuela on national television Saturday (CBS, 2 p.m.EDT). Jordan was at his best down the stretch, saving the heavilyfavored Americans from an embarrassing loss before a footstopping capacity crowd of

McCrory beats two opponents

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) The U.S. boxing team’s dream of a medal for everyone in the Pan American games is still alive. While Cuban boxers were upset in two of their three bouts, Steve McCrory, the only American in action Tuesday, had to fight off both a hostile Venezuelan crowd and a dogged Jorge Arcia of Panama Tuesday night tc win his preliminary-round bout in the 112-pound division. That put the 19-year-old from Detroit into the quarterfinals on Saturday, one bout away from a medal that would be a start toward fulfilling the coaches’ predictions of medals for all 11 of their boxers. It was a good day overall for Americans, who won six gold and four silver medals in shooting, and three golds in judo. Michael Jordan led a second half rally that erased a 10-point deficit and gave the U.S. basketball team a 72-69 win

13,000 in the Poliedro. Once the veteran Brazilians four of their players were starters in the 1979 Pan Am games built a 55-45 lead with less than 11 minutes left, Jordan assumed control. Shooting from outside, working inside with his contortionist jump shots and dunks, Jordan scored all but 10 of the American’s last 27 points. His slam basket clinched the comeback just before the buzzer. Jordan was asked about the Americans’ sluggish starts in consecutive victories over Mexico and Brazil. They trailed the Mexicans by 11 points midway through the second half, but rallied for a 74-63 decision Monday night. They were down by five points with less than six minutes remaining Tuesday night. His explanation: “Maybe it makes us work harder... Coach (Jack Hartman) takes a timeout and we all get enthused again.” Sam Perkins, Jordan’s North Carolina teammate, scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half, helping the Americans to a 35-33 halftime lead. Wayman Tisdale of Oklahoma added 12 points.

over Brazil. The U.S. baseball team won its second straight, downing Canada 10-5. The United States’ nine gold medals gave it 13 golds and 24 medals in all. Cuba, with 12 golds in weightlifting, still had the overall lead with 15 golds and 30 total medals. More American gold may be on tap today with the start of swimming, in which the United Stat es is heavily favored. Four swimming golds will be decided tonight. Among the outstanding individual achievements on Tuesday was a no-hitter by Lori Stoll of Chillicothe, Mo., in the U.S women’s softball team’s 160 victory over Venezuela. / But there were still problems for the games’ organizers. High winds blew out the Pan Am flame at Olympic stadium, which had to be relighted, and two banks of lights at Palo Verde Stadium went out for 17 minutes during the U.S.-Canada baseball game.
