First equipment, then forgotten undies, now weather delays British train

Daily Telegraph, London LONDON British Rail’s Advance Passenger Train suffered yet more ignominy when it was towed back to Glasgow after completing only 37 miles of the journey to London. The setback Wednesday, following hard on Monday’s inaugural problems with the automatic tilting mechanism and Miss Isla St. Clair’s underwear, was blamed on the weather by British Rail The S7O million train left Glasgow on time at 7 a.m. but sub-zero temperatures caused freezing in the air brake system and made it unsafe to continue, a spokesman said. The train was towed slowly back to its depot in Glasgow by a locomotive. The 60 passengers were set down at Carstairs Station to either return to Glasgow or to continue on to London by a conventional train, itself 40 minutes late due to engine trouble.

House boosts Alaskan gas pipeline proposal

The vote, 233-173, was much closer than expected after the Senate passed an identical measure by a lopsided margin Nov. 19. Wednesday’s action appeared to pave the way for bankers to arrange the financing of what would be the most costly private construction project in history. The new House vote is expected to confirm final passage of the bill and avoid a filibuster in the Senate. The new legislation waives provisions of the law under which President Carter in 1977 selected a consortium led by the Northwest Alaskan Pipeline Co. to build the pipeline. The most controversial waiver shifts some of the financial risk to users of natural gas if the line is not completed. Besides this socalled prebilling provision, other waivers allow the gas producers an equity stake in the pipeline and provide for inclusion in the system of a $6 billion conditioning plant. The pipeline, which would be built over 4,800 miles at a cost of more than S4O billion, would originate on the North Slope of

Hardee's to buy Burger Chef chain for $44 million

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Burger Chef, an Indianapolisbased fast-food chain of more than 650 outlets, is being acquired by a North Carolina business for $44 million, officials said. General Foods Corp., the parent company of Burger Chef Systems Inc., announced the sale Wednesday to Hardee’s Food Systems Inc., based at Rocky Mount, N.C. Burger Chef’s headquarters and training center will remain here “for the foreseeable future,” said Breen O. Condon, vice president and general counsel for Hardees. Teachers in strip-search are reassigned

(AP) - Two teachers who took part in last week’s strip-search of 26 third-grade students will been permanently reassigned, according to Jefferson County School Superintendent Donald Ingwerson. During a news conference Wednesday at which he announced the reassignments, Ingwerson also announced new rules for conducting searches. The new policies are the result of the furor created last week when 26 third-grade students at Frayser Elementary School were strip-searched by three teachers after money was reported missing. Stuart Yussman, a lawyer for several parents of Frayser students involved in the search, said he believes a minor cannot legally consent to a search.
