Crane, I spent a year in a. girl’s prep school and could never stand to live again in sajph an all-girl environment. \ “Maybe I am too mature to enjoy the silly gossip of my own sdx, so why do colleges still fx/Sst about their fraternities antt sororities?” GANG STAGE „■ Sororities and fraternities illustrate what is psychologically a throwback to a ’more juvenile stage of emotional development. ; The infant starts at the egocentric stage where he is the- center of his social

universe, while his parents and siblings circle around him as mere satellites to satisfy his basic desires, as for milk and a dry diaper. By the age of kindergarten, he realizes that Daddy and Mamma are very vital satellites, so he begins to fixate upon them. Alas, some people never grow out of that “Mammafixation” so they remain bachelors all their lives. Similarly, some girls become “Daddy-fixated” and thus never can find a suitable young man for a possible mate. But at the age of 9 to 12, both sexes enter the true psychic homosexual stage, but without c ft sexual aggression. Then the boys band together in secret societies and even sign their names in their own blood to the charter that includes their vow to be forever true to their pals. Boys are then disdainful of girls and cling to their own sex, while girls likewise are girlfixated and regard boys as dirty little ruffians. But by the middle teens, perhaps 85°0 turn their attention to the opposite sex and grow romantic. This is the heterosexual stage. Alas, college sororities and fraternities are a throw-back to that 10-year-old’s “gang” loyalty to his own sex. Thus, freshmen college youth stampede like sheep to do the bidding of their leaders and even confine dating to the sorority and fraternity that their leaders prescribe. People like Lola are independent, not sheeplike, so she is psychologically too mature to revert to the “gang” stage, even when glorified as a campus sorority or fraternity. (Always writ* to Or.
